I was at Kirtland AFB in Albuquerque, NM today. They've got a neat selection of static displays so I figured somebody might like to see pictures. The PBY is probably the ugliest PBY I've ever seen, paint wise, but at least it's in one piece. Shouldn't corrode out here for sure. The wooden blades on the Pedro are starting to come apart. They are rare as hens teeth but probably beyond saving for flight use. Yes the P-51 is plastic.

Spent 3½ “lovely” years at Kirtland. Don’t recognize any of those locations. Keep in mind that I left there Oct 18, 1959. Could have been a few changes since then.

I think the PBY used to be a funky yellow and orange... it was in an area that could be seen from the outside.

Thanks for the pics Brad

The PBY-5A , N4582U, BuNo46457 was painted light gray with a yellowish orange stripe in the colors of a USAAF OA-10A from the ETO. The blue over gray is generic late war if not the correct shading. Needs some more markings on it, I think.
Glad to know the 'stang is plastic. One less warbird sitting on a pole.

As I was searching for old photos of the PBY (OA-10) I came across this solicitation for bids on annual cleaning and maintenance of the Kirtland AFB air park... including repaint of the Catalina in 2012 it looks like:

https://www.fbo.gov/index?s=opportunity ... =1&au=&ck=

Anyone want to bid?

I guess you're right Ryan..I seem to remember more yellow and orange...of course that may have been because ANY color would stand out against the back ground of Kirtland AFB....

Wait a minute. Rusty memory just got jogged from a trip to NM almost 20 years ago. Is Kirtland the base you have to taxi through to get to the GA terminal in Albu.? We were on a family ski trip and my adopted sister who had never been on an airplane before that trip was a bit uneasy with all the mil. hardward parked on the ramp pointing at the 737.
