Everything I have heard from the folks that used to take care of her in the 24/29 squadron is that she is a great bird but it is really tough to make the economics of keeping her in the air work. As was already mentioned she is not, unfortuantlyl a draw at airsows except to the more educated folks on this forum and she can't get into most of the smaller shows.

I'd love to see someone with some marketing experience put together a C-46 Berlin Airlift connection piece to help book any C-46 that makes it back to the circuit, a la the C-54. Its history needs to be promoted more.

The only group flying a C-46 in a Warbird format is the CAF. Theres just something wrong about that. A shame to not see more of these huge behemoths being operated as Warbirds. They seem like the ultimate support craft, being able to carry equipment and personal alike.

Are these aircraft maintenance hogs and have a lot of problems? Or are they just costly to operate with those 2 R-2800s and a huge gas tank?

There are still a lot of them being used in Alaska and Canada aparently. Look on youtube and you'll find a lot of current C-46 vids of doing cargo flying.
