Capt. Duane W. Beeson checks out the damage to his Mustang's vertical stab after returning from the 4th Fighter Group's 5 March 1944 escort mission to France. He downed a Bf 109 south of Bordeaux on this mission. He was shot down (POW) exactly a month later. One of the 8th AF's deadliest aces, "Bee" is credited with 17.333 aerial victories.

Jack...The way I heard it was:
"I'm a white male between the ages of 18 and 49 with a big mouth and a gun. I AM the American dream."
I'd be the American dream but I'm 25 years over the age limit.

Mudge the armed geezer :hide:

Actually Fouga, that's 17 point 333 aerial victories. In the United States, we use a "period" where Europe uses a "comma" and we use a "comma" where Europe uses a "period". Everything is just reversed, that's all!

If it were really over 17 thousand, it would look like: 17,333.

Hope that explains the language barrier! :)

Just having a bit of fun  I do wonder how you can get a 0.333 victory? shared with 2 others?

Mon Nov 09, 2009 7:41 am

affirmative !

one e/a shared on 5th April 1944 by Maj. Duane W. Beeson with 1/Lt. Hipolitus T. Biel and 1/Lt. Clemens A. Fiedler

I know Martin is familiar with Frank, but my source for any question regarding allied aerial victories from WWI onwards is Frank Olynyk. He wrote the excellent "Stars and Bars", which many know of, but what most (I've found) don't know is that he compiled and self-published 10 additional softcover books covering most of the allied victories. He never (yet?) got to many of the RAF's aerial credits, but all of the US kills are documented.

These 10 books are extremely difficult to find - it's taken me years, but I have all but the USAAF Mediterranean book - probably because they are such valuable works of reference and folks don't sell them! He goes above and beyond USAF Historical Study no. 85, for example, in the USAAF ETO credits volume to become the "last word" on the subject.

So, if Frank says "17.333", it's 17.333! 8)
