I nabbed this on the Hyperscale Forums:

Quote:
Update: Martin from Swiss Mustangs has ID'd the pilot and unit:

2/Lt. Henry G. Mohr, Jr. - 405th FG 511th FS, POW for just a few hours as the plane took a bath on V-E day.

What a find!

Looks pretty solid. Would be a good airframe for an R-3350 Reno effort turning a Skyraider propeller too. Selling the 50's and a few other parts could raise some good money to go racing!

Mohr dosen't appear on the DOD POW database meaning he wasn't considered to be captured. I have a General friend who's a wheel in the P-47 pilots assoc. He's trying to track Mohr down for me.

Mohr was apparently supposed to witness the recovery, but ill health prevented him doing so, as I understand it, his collegue flying the second P-47 was on hand to do so though.

Obviously blown canopy from the pics in the link :)
What a find, will be great to see more pics when it's cleaned up, and I wonder what other aircraft are at the bottom of those Austrian lakes?

Great P-47! Congratulations to those responsible for the great recovery. Now the real question is if the Naval Historical Center is going to test the new Title 14 law and chase our fellow aircraft preservers in Europe or just selectively abuse Americans.

Sure hope you are kidding :)

Gotta restore it back to the day it went down. As authentic as they can make it. How many combat vet Jugs are still out there after all?

Someone else said they were wondering about other planes in the bottom of lakes. There has got to be very many. The guy who recovered the Buffalo claimed he found around 50 planes under water in the Karelia, Russia area alone!

SWEEEET!! C'mon now, how cool is that?! :D How many actual WWII combat vet survivors are on par with this plane in regard to completeness, originality, and authenticity? In regard to P-47 alone, I'll stick my throat out and venture to say none whatsoever. What are the chances someone could dig up a photo like that on top of everything else? I just hope the plane's pilot is enjoying this as much as the rest of us are. 8)
