Source: Fatal Army Air Forces Aviation Accidents in the United States, 1941-1945 by Anthony J. Mireles:

4-23-42B Bakersfield, California. At 0814, a Vultee BT-13A stalled and spun into the ground 10 miles west of Bakersfield, California, killing students A/C Robert D. Murphy, Los Angles, California, and A/C Edward Ortenburger, Bay City, Michigan. Aviation Cadet John N. Week, who witnessed the crash, stated to investigators that he saw the airplane about 300 feet above him in a spin at an altitude of about 2,600 feet and watched the airplane until it struck the ground.

Note: the B after the date indicates the second fatal accident on that date. There were six fatal accidents that day at various locations. That's all I have but I hope it is of some help. Randy
