WIX Explosive Experts Needed

Mon Dec 28, 2009 11:51 am

To try to better understand the depth charge issue, I understand that when used underwater, the force of the displaced (non-compressible H2O) water is what causes the destruction of submarines. I also understand that napalm also consumed all available oxygen in its explosion sphere thus suffocating enemy as well.

How or why would a thin skinned depth charge act compared to an equivalent frag bomb? Would it offer more concussion than a bomb encased in a thick, fragmentation shell?

There was some reason they were used in the jungles of Burma toward the end of the war. I have even heard that Tokyo Rose berated the soldiers for being inhumane as these weapons reportedly killed more Japanese than the conventional bombs.

It would act like the current fuel-air bomb, kill by concussion I suspect.

well....

Tokyo Rose and all her little buddies shouldn't have attacked the US and started the war. Human organs can be turned into a jellied mess with a little concussive force.

As far as depth charges on submarines go, the sea pressure is the real killer. The depth charge just cracks the pressure hull - the water pressure does the rest.

Jet 1, I think you are a few years off on your statement about Tokyo Rose ( and her little buddies) attacking American and starting the war. If you are talking about Ms. Aquino, who seems to be the most famous of a number of women who did broadcasts in English for the Japanese; the FBI website says she was a schoolgirl in 1941, and 1942. Therefore she had nothing to do with the Pearl Harbor attacks in Dec. 1941. She did not begin to make broadcasts until the Japanese govt asked her to in Nov. 1943 almost 2 years after the start of the war.

And it is obvious that the planning for the attack and the start of the war must have begun even while she was still in San Diego and a U S citizen, in the summer of 1941. She did not even leave the U S until July, 1941, sailing to Japan.

There is quite a bit of dispute about how much guilt, if any, she really had. At first the U S govt decided that there was not enough evidence of a crime to charge her after the war. Some of her broadcasts were playing music, not a war crime. It was after a campaign by two reporters that she was later charged. The FBI site also says there was perjury by a witness against her. You can imagine that in the days after the war it would be hard for her to overcome strong public feelings and get a fair trial. In the end, after serving 6 years she was pardoned by President Ford. A Presidential pardon has the legal weight of reversing all legal guilt, it is not just a legal parole, so just from a legal standpoint, after that she was no longer guilty of a crime. Just like when Ford pardoned Nixon. That's a lot of power to give one person, but it is our law.

The site does not say if any of the other Tokyo Roses were prosecuted or if they were U S citizens.

Japan had plenty of major war criminals, like the emperor and I don't think we got all of them.

About Tokyo Rose I would suggest the reading of this work, it sure was revealing to me:

http://www.gutenberg-e.org/pfau/index.html

you can jump to the chapter on Tokyo Rose or read it all, you wont loose anything doing so.

Question: was there a Tokyo Rose has the legend says?

best

Rreis, thanks for the Tokyo Rose reference, it is pretty much what I read on the FBI site, except I had the name different, Aquino instead of Iva Toquri. Your site goes into more detail, I'll go back and check the name again.

Guess what we are both correct. Her name is given as Iva Toguri d' Aquino.

Anyway she did not take part in the attacks that started the war on Dec. 7. 41.

I have read that some GI s enjoyed the music she played and if it was me, I sure wouldn't put too much stake in any broadcast by the other side.

I doubt if she should have been imprisoned for war crimes. In any event , if she got 6 years that slimy Emperor should have gotten 600.

Hi Bill. The most interesting on that article is that much which she is supposed to have said or done on the radio probably didn't happen. Anyway it was the first place I've found with a different view on this phenomenon, so to speak
