DESCRIPTION; The pilots of U.S. Navy fighter squadron VF-142 Fighting Falcons in 1958 in front of one of their Vought F8U-1 (F-8A) Crusader fighters. VF-142 was re-desigated VF-96 on 1 June 1962 and disestablished on 1 December 1975.

DESCRIPTION; USS Lexington (CVA-16) underway in WestPac waters, with Carrier Air Group 21 (CVG-21), August 16, 1958. Just eight days later, on August 24, Communist Chinese artillery began shelling the Nationalist Chinese islands of Quemoy and Matsu, prompting Blue Ghost's deployment to the Taiwan Straits at various times during the next four months, along with other units of the Seventh Fleet.

Robbie, Thanks for sharing the very interesting photos (AND Happy Birthday!). The 10 year period from about 1955 to about 1964 is my favorite for military and civil aircraft. There was a fantastic variety of military jets and prop aircraft in service and military aircraft were at their most colorful during that era.

1958 was probably among the best of these years.

I turned forty on 9-9-99, and hit fifty on 09-09-09. What can it mean? :shock:
