Cavanaugh's T-6 was damaged this afternoon in a landing accident at Addison airport. Aparently they did not get a good downlock and ended up either landing gear up or having the gear fold up on touchdown. Did a bit of sliding and spinning on the ground but both occupants got out okay. THe one photo that I saw showed her still on the runway and doesn't appear that there is much damage other than what you would associate with a gear up accident in a T-6

The polished one or the painted one?

I'm glad the crew got out unhurt!

From the picture it appears that it is polished with a red tail and cowling

The Cavanaugh polished T-6 was involved in a gear collapse here at Addison airport. The pilot reported that while putting the gear up after takeoff, the left gear did not retract. As he recycled the gear, the gear handle jumped over the "up limit" and locked in the up position. He was unable to move the handle, but the gear was in the down position. He landed with the gear down, but because of the gear handle was frozen in the up position, the lock pins were not ingaged. He shut down the engine and landed "no flaps" because the gear would have gone towards the up position as soon as he pushed the hydraulic power lever. The aircraft exited the runway and slid to a stop. Thanks to his quick thinking and knowledge of the system the aircraft sustained minimal damage. A museum volunteer was aboard and no injuries were sustained. The aircraft was retrieved by CFM personnel and is now in the hangar. Doug

Here are a few shots of the aircraft in better days. Glad to hear everyone was OK. Hopefully you can get her back into the air soon! Any idea what caused the problem? Do you think something was out of rig? I'm going through the uplocks and downlocks on my T-6 right now, so any insight you have would be appreciated.

You had me going with the subject line (T-6 goes down)

I thought another 200+ post attach angle thread was in the
making :!:

I'm glad nobody was hurt and the aircraft (apparently) sustained
minimal damage.

Speaking of gear-up landings, what are the opinions on the auxiliary
attach angle skid plates (designed to protect the attach angles in
the event of a gear-up landing)? Do they fit underneath the
attach angle fairings/covers (I've never seen a set installed
on a T-6 and was curious).

The L/H gear would not retract, indicating an internal leak in the cylinder. When the pilot tried to cycle the gear, as he raised the gear handle, probably in a hurry, it went over the up stop of the gear handle detents. When I got to the A/C, I wasn't able to move it back over the stop. When we got it back on it's gear, I told one of the mechanics to get the handle down to force the pins in "even if you have to break the handle". With alot of force and a quick jerk with both hands and feet, he was able to get it down. I told the pilot if he would have climbed out on the wing and did the same it might have saved it. :D He said "it could have been worse", and I said "Yea, I could have been flying it". I was to fly that flight, but had to go home for the pest control guy. Lucky me.

I think (?) our own Stoney Stonich (who posts here now and then?
or maybe on another board?) markets them.

They're called attach angle skid guards, and are supposed
to protect the wing attach angles in the event of a gear-up
landing. The ad in the NATA rag I'm looking at says the angles
can be ground down to the bolts in just a 20 yard skid on
pavement.

They're inexpensive ($75/pair). I was just wondering if they
fit underneath the covers and/or how they were installed...?
What are they made out of? Are they STC'd or is it a 337 deal?

The angle skids thing. That's what really hurts. We bought 2 sets after doing the AD and were planning on installing them after todays flight.

yes they fit under the fairings. The angles on this T-6 only drug for a few feet before getting to the grass, but we will have to replace them.

I understand that Lance has some that actually had a NA serial number on them....story is that NA engineers decided to manuafacture some after the inevitable gear-up landings the military suffered.
Doug, glad it was no worse...

Alex:
I hadn't either (heard about North American-manufactured skid plates) until, in doing the attach angle inspection, one of the lead guys on the B-29 effort here told me about them and their availability at Lance.

I started a new thread with info on the skid plates and a photo of the ad from NATA Skylines.
