Bombs detnonations in WW2

I have always been curious about this after watching countless videos and documentaires about WW2: when we see iron bombs dropped from a B-17, B-24, B-25 or from any other plane for that matter and they impact the water, is that the bomb detonating on impact with the water or is that just a splash? In other words were the bombs sensitive enough to be set off by the impact with the water?

At that kind of impact speed, water is just slightly softer than concrete, so I would imagine it would be just fine for triggering a standard detonator.
