Question about the Art applied to the Nose of Richard Bong's P-38. Was this paint or and enlarged picture?

I believe the story was that it was a "blown up" or enlarged picture.

It was a photo. And it was in color sort of. I think Jack Cook knew about the process that was a type of tinting that was done then. The EAA's P-38 is pretty right on as far as I know. The cool think is that I met the real Marge at the EAA Museum under the wing of their P-38. She was really nice and even signed a pic for me.

Neat I figured it was either a picture or a really talented artist. But how would they protect it from the elements?

I thought I read that it was clear coated over or something. I also read that it wasn't on during all of his combat missions, just some, and then later all of the PR Tour.

From what I've heard it was replaced several times. There's pictures out there where you can see where the picture used to be on the nose.

It was copied and blown up by the sqd photo section then hand tinted.
It was pasted to the gun bay door and the shaellacked.
