Here's the official answer to Lackland AFB access direct from their website:

Lackland Air Force Base is no longer an open installation. People, other than families of basic training graduates, wishing to visit the base will be required to have a sponsor with a valid military ID card. Due to security requirements and manning, we cannot support not sponsored tour or visit requests.

Note: BMT graduation ceremonies are occuring as scheduled at this time.

Randy White, of Dallas Cowboys fame, has just opened a great BBQ resteraunt here in Addison, which I go to once a week. It's probably one of the best I've found and I'm a native Texan. The Lackland aircraft are still accessible. The parade ground they are parked around is right by the road that splits the base. It is a major public road. There is also a visitor center right by the gate where they used to give a pass to walk around the planes. You had to leave your vehicle in their parking lot. But San Antonio is a loooong way from DFW area.

Yep San Antonio is about a 5 hour drive..but there are airstrips near to
Lackland, if co-ordination is possible with some local WIXers?

As for Robs reference to NAS Dallas and Hensley, isn't that a ghost town
now? Hensley did have a F7U Cutlass as a gate-guard back in the 60's
though. The old Ling-Temco-Vought part of the field I guess, is still in
business under a new name?

Does anyone know what happened to the A/C at NAS Dallas? I remember seeing and F-4, F-105, KC-97, F-14, A-4(?). I remember a lot of aircraft in past the gate, and most had training weapons on them. They seemed well kept also. No pictures (long painful memories of that drive home)

Michael, Lackland is in the SW part of town. It's right on the freeway going to Castroville.

If one could arrange a small plane ride into Stinson, you could go see the FW-190 in the Texas air museum there, then go to Lackland AFB and see those planes out there...

Another place is Dukes, Midway and Beltline. Great hambuger's and usally a great view at lunch.

I think I was told that it's now either in North Texas or Oklahoma. You could look it up on the registry. I wish I had the money! Seems there aren't too many warbirds here in San Antonio especially when you consider that this is Military City USA and the population... also the amount of retired WW2 pilots in the vicinity.
On the other hand, I've heard rumors from a flight instructor I know of some untouched P-51 airframes around and possibly a Standard Catagory P-51 in the corner of some hanger...

Down in the San Antonio area there was a P51 project that was owned by Bruce Morehouse... think it has been sold. The "flyable" P51 is Miss Marylin 2... but dont think it will fly anytime soon since it has the engine pickeled....
