Clippers?

Actually I think it was the Martin boats that coined the name 'clippers' and it became applied to all the big Pan Am boats.

The first clippers were the Sykorsky one's... Starting with the S-40. the "Clipper" moniker invokes the relation with the fast trading sail Clippers of the previous century (XIX century, that is. There is even a poster juxtaposing a Boeing Clipper (the Yankee Clipper) with a sail clipper. Chronologically you have the S-40, S-42, then the Martin M-130 and then the Boeing B-314.

by the way, haven't been there but it seems a visit to the Passenger Terminal in Treasure Island is recommended to Clipper lovers...

Considering your monaker, have you seen that youtube of the Canso that hops over the 2 guys in the little fishing boat? Very entertaining!

Dave, that's the opening scene from "Always" with John Goodman's character flying. It's my all time favorite avaition movie scene!! N9505C is the Catalina. I think it was the SoCal fires in '08 where there was some discussion of the Mars boat's firefighting and some entertaining speculation was put forth imagining the Mars in the scene mention previously. I think the opinion was that the Mars would have just ingested the two fishermen and their boat and kept going.
Thats also the first time I've seen a waterbomber scooping from straight ahead. I'd love to have the lens they used! Yowza!
