Bendix inertia starter

Mon Mar 01, 2010 8:23 pm

Hello all.

What are the differences between the Bendix inertia/electric starters. I want to replace the inertia starter with a inertia/electric starter so I have the option to wind up the starter in flight if need be. I was given one but not sure if it is the right gear ratio for the Wright R-975. Any thoughts?

You're gonna have to really work at it to get the prop stopped in flight with the Yale. I wouldn't worry about having to use it in flight really.

Doesn't the motor just piggyback onto the back of the inertia starter?

That is what I thought at first but it is a different casting, and Bendix has a bunch of different models with the same mounting flange.

My W-670 Stearman had one that you could either crank with the motor or with the handle. Interesting! If yours is crank only then maybe it is just an older version.
