Not with stars & bars, but didn't a number of the FAS and FAH survivors see combat?

During November 1952, this plane headed for combat in Korea aboard the USS Valley Forge (CV-45) as a member of VF-92. This Corsair flew numerous missions over Korea and sustained damage from anti-aircraft fire on May 1, 1953.

Yes.. an F4U-1 "bird cage" Corsair. The mention Dave describes can be found in Taras' replies to the recent Lake Michigan F6F Recovery and Restoration thread here...

A popular misconception, Bu/No.17995 was never in the RNZAF, it was only painted in RNZAF colours after it was bought by Tim Wallis in 1990 and shipped to NZ and flown as ZK-FUI with the Alpine Fighter Collection between 1990 and 1999.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up for me. But still the question remains: could this one have been a combat vet with the US Navy or Marines?

This aircraft is actually a non-birdcage variant of the F4U-1 unofficially known as an "F4U-1A" retrofitted to represent the earlier "birdcage" variant (phew... that was a mouthful). Harry Doan did the modifications, after rescuing it from a railroad yard of all places in the mid 1960's. Sad that it's stuck down in Brazil... Also, the RNZAF never flew any birdcage Corsairs.. just "F4U-1A's", F4U-1D's and FG-1D's. None of the RNZAF FG-1D's saw combat in WWII, at least, not with them. Ironically, the Royal Navy did fly birdcage variants of the F4U-1...

Cheers,
Richard

Ex- Salvadoran Air Force FAS 215 (BuNr. 92629) and FAS 220 (BuNr. 92095) are combat vets. They performed mostly bombing, strafing and patrol missions during the El Salvador-Honduras war July 14-18, 1969.

The Fighter Collections FG-1D Corsair Bu.No 88297, did not take part in combat during WW2.

I have worked on this aircraft since 1991 and have done considerable research into her history.

Following contact with the aircrafts previous owner, i can confirm she never saw any action.

I sent all my research to Rob mears who will confirm this.

It is however, one of the very few, unrestored ,fabric winged, Corsairs still active.
