Over the Trenches

Sun Mar 14, 2010 8:24 pm

Don't have HBO so am not watching PACIFIC....but The Amazing Race just did a segment where the contestants belly crawl a WW1 battlefield under fire--no kidding--live pyro...and two WW1 fighters doing incredibly low level passes with simulated bomb drops. I expect you can watch the replay at CBS.com. Too bad no one told them how to wear the equipment!

Neat segment! Looked like a fun challenge. I would like to know more about the WW1 airplanes they were flying. The Fokker triplane appeared to have a radial engine, rather than a vintage rotary. The "other" fighter never really got a decent camera shot, so I don't know what it was. The wings kinda looked like a Tiger Moth. Anyone in France know anything about these airplanes?

Personally, I would have opted for the Morse Code challenge, since I'm an amateur radio operator and could have copied the Morse and been on my way in about one minute!

The airplanes were from La Ferte Alais, the allied airplane was a Stampe modified to look like an SE-5.

Neat museum.

They have two Dak's one of which is a straight C-47 the other a C-53D. There was some chatter about C-53's here on a recent thread.

Their c/n 11737 is the C-53.
11737 42-68810 D16Jun43 -Oran 14Aug43 - USA - RFC 01Sep45

Their c/n 13142 is the C-47.
13142 42-93251 D27Apr44 - 12th AF Italy 13Jun44 - USA - RFC 05Nov45

Both saw overseas service in the Med with USAAF.

I never watch this show. But I was so glad I caught this episode. Those were some beautiful aircraft and some talented flying. Even a couple scary low passes over people (atleast it appeared that way on camera).

I loved the head-on shots of the DR.1. Would have been the cherry on top, if only the engine had been spinning. Definately took guts on all sides, to do what they did.
