A Veteran passes, my father.

Fri May 14, 2010 8:01 pm

My Dad passed away on Monday after a period of failing health. My mother was with him at the end and my surviving siblings and I were there before and immediately after. The closest my Dad came to a warbird was hitting a P-38 with his bulldozer on Ashiya airfield during the first weeks of the occupation. He came home from the war and took up with his father in the contracting business, a tradition that lasted at least 60 years in my small New Hampshire home town. A devout Catholic my father volunteered his time and skills for many years in our parish. Dad also gave of his skills to help many elderly low income people with home repairs often at nominal or no cost to them and never seeking any notice for himself. Many relatives and friends have recounted wonderful memories of my father over the last few days which I will cherish.

John, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. If there is anything you need, please ask. Even if it's just an ear to listen.

John,

Having lost my own dad recently, I really and honestly feel your loss and anguish. In time it will all start to balance out and you will remember odd, silly little things or statements and the fun things from the past will wash over you like warm sunshine.
Just keep in mind that everything is 100% better for him now and he's probably met up with friends and family and they are enjoying each others company once again.
Hang tough and think positive thoughts my friend-it heals slowly, but it does heal!

My sincere condolences to you and your entire family. I believe your Dad and a lot of his comrades will soon have a huge reunion, and perhaps he will fly a Warbird. That is how I like to picture my Dad and my Uncle Dean. The pain you feel will get more managable as time goes on. Just don't let anyone tell you when to stop grieving. You will not realize it at first, but it does get better a little at a time. May God bless you and your entire family, and help you through this time.

My thoughts are with you. Not much we can do but make sure their memory is never lost. Share with others as much as you can about him and his life.

John, I, too, am sorry about your dad's passing. Yes, he's in a better place, but he's not here with you now, and I know that hurts.

Your message was a wonderful reminder to do for others for the sake of serving those who can't help themselves. It's not always about the financial gain. As I'm also a contractor, your dad's unselfishness and love for others live on in my heart here in the Southwest as an example of how to be during the week that which I declare I am on Sundays.

All the best,
Michael
