Leon Mathis, the pilot, had the engine quit on him while doing a barel roll. He was reharsing for an airshow on the naval air base of Hyeres. As of today, he is the guy with the most hours on the FlugWerk FW 190A-8/N.
He had engines quit on him while flying 12 times already during his lifetimes. And is still there to tell how it happened. 63 years old and a very good aerobatic pilot – fly his Zlin 560 almost everyday, and never flat and steady.

Back to the story, didn't it have the Russian Ash engine??

It was powered by the Chinese copy of the ASh-82 engine, made by Housai. I can't remember the exact name of the engine, it's an HS-?. (The engine in the Nanchang is another Housai, the HS-6, again a copy of a russian engine.) The example with the four-blade prop that was damaged recently is the only one powered by a Russian-built ASh, and the Chino example is powered by a P&W R-2800. All the other examples have the Housai as far as I'm aware...

First and foremost, it's great that the pilot walked/swam away from this one. Commiserations to all the people who have been involved with this aircraft, it must be deeply disappointing.

You are right about being deeply disappointing. We plan on using the Russia ASH-82 from Flug Werk. it is russian according to the book and the numbers on the engine. 0 timed in Romania, i beleive
I am waiting to hear exactly what happened, if the engine failed during a roll or something along that line. My first guess would be a fuel issue, either low fuel, pick up problem, or maybe contamination.
I am very happy that the pilot made it out safely , that was a good looking Fw

I understood what you were trying to say in your post. I think you made a very valid point. Your point will become more relevant when the MAAM gets the Widow in the air, as I don't think anyone has flown one since the early 60's? (Now don't some of you posters get your panties all bunched up, I will admit now that I think it was the early 60's that the last air tanker version crashed.)
Unfortunately you have met the wrath of the few on this forum who get upset if everything said is not 100% accurate. I have seen some very rude attacks on posters here who someone thought didn't have the right user name, painted an aircraft inaccurately, didn't install the right "dash" numbered engine, etc. I am sure that some of these same posters would complain that the tires were not filled with the proper vintage air, or that the decal on the prop blade was 1/16" off.
Anyway, please keep posting your opinions, observations and ideas as I enjoy reading all posts on this forum. Remember, opinions are never wrong, they are what you perceive.
Now I will wait patiently to get flamed either publicly or privately about this post as I am sure I have upset some of the self proclaimed true experts who are never wrong.

As far as I know, the french plane that ditched had a real ASh-82 also overhauled in Romania.

One has the right to be frustrated or even angry when a rare warbird crashes
One should gain all the facts before spouting off about a pilot's ability

Non-pilots should tread lightly when trying to critique the actions of a warbird pilot, especially if said pilot has several thousand hours under his or her belt.

And lastly, anyone can make a mistake, even the best pilot walking the face of this earth, but one's perspective of a situation is better respected when they have the credentials and experience to pass judgement.

I respect everyone on this forum even those that disagree. I got some very nice pm's and to be honest this thread didn't really bother me. But it's starting to now. Things have been settled and nothing more has to be said. I am getting the picture that because I am not a pilot I am not allowed to post on here and that is not cool. A few misunderstood my post because I put the wrong words into it. I was not critique the pilot. Even if I was a plane crashes one way or another. That is an easy fact anybody can make. : I understand others here know more then I do about flying. But I guarantee you I would beat you out in avaition history. I am but a lonely student pilot, like the majority of people that try I got burned out with the cost. I may not be a full pilot but I sure know what it takes to be one: a good pilot is always learning, 100% awareness, an understanding of your airplane inside and out, safe flying ALWAYS, and respect.

No hard feelings toward anybody. Lets move on forget about me and you can all get back on topic about the 190. Ok?

The one due here in NZ is also powered by a ASH-82, hopefully the aircraft will have better 'luck' than these complex replicas to date - we will make sure we get Major Erich Rudorffer to fly it since he has the required 'experience' to fly a 190 and it is painted in his colours
