Mitchell & Mustangs flyover at Boeing Field

Sun Jun 13, 2010 2:53 pm

Saturday night was the B-17 75th anniversary gala held at Clay Lacy aviation. Boeing Bee was towed over and in the hangar for the event. I never got my ticket so I have no shots from that. However, this freed me up to be able to shoot the flyby of Grumpy, Impatient Virgin & Upupa Epops with the perfect evening light. They really beat up the field good especially John Sessions in Grumpy. It's nice to see the drop tanks on I.V.

Very nice.

Could I order one of those big white mountains for the NY area? They make a terrific backdrop. Drop it right on Newark, that'd be fine.

Your photo talents never cease to amaze me Al! I swear you should work for a warbird magazine as their photo guy!

That really does look like the mother of all beat-up jobs... mostly because of this shot, which is positively epic. :D

The long-range pic of the Mitchell on final with the mountain behind is positively jaw-dropping as well. Truly well done!

As usual, great shots Al. You were lucky that Rainier wasn't all hazed out that late in the afternoon. I.V. does look good with the tanks !
For those of you wanting to ask about the DC-3 in the corner of that picture, that's the 'ALASKA AIRLINES' DC-3 that sat on the ellipse @ MoF for about 25 years until it became too corroded and ugly to display. The MoF towed it around the corner behind MDC (military delivery center) where it shares space with a dilapidated ex FAA JETSTAR and replaced it with the TWA DC-2 which I hope spends the Winters inside Clays hanger. Nothing like our Winters (lots of rain and occasional snows) and a nice salt air coastal environment to keep rare airplanes in tip top condition.

Great photos Al! Do you have any information just where Boeing Bee is being stored these days?

It's still primarily in the Plant 2 building but was towed over to Clay Lacy Aviation for the B-17 Gala. It should be back in Plant 2 again. Sounds like they did the moving very early in the morning, I assume to avoid traffic issues. It would've been cool to see them towing it across the road in the dark. No word lately on when Plant 2 is supposed to be torn down.

Great to hear its still inside! Hopefully Boeing's plans to tear down the plant have been put on hold.
