Warbird Information Exchange

Spent Saturday with my father-in-law and he wanted to go see the Pate Museum. After letting him know the the museum was gone, I suggested the Vintage Flying Museum instead. Being a Marine tank commander in the Pacific during World War Two he wasn't real big on the idea but ended up having a great time, and talked to many of the folks there.

I didn't know the static aircraft outside of the Vintage Flying Museum had gone (the folks on the west side of 360 don't tell us east siders much). Turns out the planes were moved to the Veterans Memorial Air Park at the south end of Meacham Airport.

Over a dozen planes there in various stages of restoration include one I had always wanted to get a close look at; a TF-102A. I think its the one from Rio Hondo. The guy there explained that they are not really open at this time but their goal is to be operational by the 18th of this month. He was gracious enough to let us in to visit and while my father-in-law and wife looked inside, I went out to look at the airplanes. A very nice collection and there was even a little piece of the Pate museum there. The B-36 propellers and wheels.

Its definitely worth a look while visiting the Vintage Flying Museum.

The Vet Memorial Park is where you have "Site A" "B, C D, G, H, and I" are there. "J" is in the VFM hanger which is the larger hanger which is under your currently marked "I" ... clear as mud?

Some very nice folks there...I didn't have time to get pics of their aircraft while I was there last April....I got to deliver their B-36 turret to them from Pima...

Although there was previously a longtime association between VFM and the other groups, I feel it should be pointed out that due to, well, differences, the Ft. Worth Veteran's Memorial Air Park (VMAP), OV-10 Bronco Assn. (OBA) and Forward Air Controller's Museum (FACM) moved out of the Vintage Flying Museum (VFM) facilities a while back and are no longer formally associated with the VFM. The VMAP/OBA/FACM facility is only a short distance away, but both the organizations and facilities are completely separate from VFM.

Since July 16, 1965 was the first flight of the OV-10 Bronco, and the OBA was the group that drove the launching of the combined VMAP/FACM effort, and OBA was started in July 1999 (or was it 98? Danged CRS disease!) we celebrate our Founder's Day and the OBA birthday on a weekend close to that date each year. This year's special since we are having a ribbon-cutting for the new VMAP/FACM/OBA museum! This Saturday (July 17th) will be the Founder's Day Picnic. Everyone interested is invited to come out and enjoy the day with us! The festivities begin at 11 AM. I'm told there are a number of other surprised planned as well. Instead of admission, it will be a potluck kind of affair so if you can bring a dish or drinks to share, it will be much appreciated. (Please contact Dawn Golas at seeker1@sbcglobal.net and let her know what you plan to bring!)

I'm one of the OBA's original 7 founders but alas, I'll be stuck here in Florida... so if you go, please feel free to post here and share all the fun with those of us who can't make it
