I think what he's trying to say is that, for the vast majority of folks deployed to OEF and OIF there is plenty of regular connectivity (internet, phone, television) to the real world.
What you're really seeing, though, is simply a difference in perspective between someone who is new to deploying and someone who isn't new to deploying. From the neophyte's perspective, it's shiny, new, exciting, nerve wracking, and a little dangerous. By the time you have several deployments under your belt, your attitude about it will be significantly different.
So, that's no disrespect or rude toward you, it's just the facts of being in a military that has been 'at war' for 9 years and there are a lot of people who have spent a lot of time in those deployed lands.
