F2G "Race 74" Update

Thu Jul 29, 2010 4:29 pm

I don't recall seeing anything posted on this yet. I happened onto the Odegaard Aviation website for the first time in some months, and noticed that they have some new photos of the F2G Super Corsair restoration (at least new to me), now with paint. Of course the thing looks amazing, and it is great to see it getting ever nearer to completion!

Is there even a chance we'll get to see 74 and 54 fly wing tip to wing-tip, pylon to pylon? Even more interesting, how many Cleveland racers could be put up in there original scheme in a race together? Kind of like a throwback game we see in our regular day sports?

I would say there is a possibility to see Racers 57 and 74 fly together because of the historic significance. Whether it would be around the pylons at Reno is another story altogether but it may make for a good magazine photo shoot.

That is awesome! It's been a long time since they'd updated the site, but it looks like they've made a ton of progress. It looks great! I never got to see Race 57 in person, and I doubt I ever will now, but I will definitely make an effort to see Race 74 if it makes a public appearance.

Seeing Race 57 on the cover of Warbird Digest was what got me interested in warbirds again after a long time away, and I've read everything I could find on the F2G's, bought the Dick Becker interview DVD, the National Air Race ones, Racing Reno, Thunder Over Reno, an F2G Erection and Maintenance manual, Graham White's R-4360 book, the model kit, etc. I even seriously considered buying Gary's R-4360-4.

I can't wait to see it fly. I hope they take some video when they roll it out and fire it up.

Leeward's "Galloping Ghost" Mustang is a Cleveland era vet that will be racing this year as well. Of course it is more heavily modified than it was back then.

There are several Cleveland era racers still around...

2 F2G's
Anson Johnsons P-51
P-51 Jay Dee in McMinnville
Paul Mantz Mustangs
Crawford P-51
The Ghost
Kermits FG1D "JOE"
A-36 at Wright Pat
Red Bull P-38

I'm sure there are more if you dig around

I dunno. Ron's pretty low key. I agree, Larry might be able to convince Ron to do a photo shoot, espescially with Bob's gentlemanly prodding, but I imagine a Reno race would be out of the question.

Just sayin'.

How are ya Chris? I've been on the road for months, just got home.....

Hey Chris, glad you're back. I sent Larry an E-mail about a possible future flight to get the two racers together. Ron's pretty good if there is some type of historical significance or something that benefits a veterans group like they did for the Tuskeegees and their families so never say never. I finished up Nazys' Baron and I guess everything is going to be pickled so I'm spending most of my time putting the MiG 15 in really nice static display condition.
