I'm not sure the story of this machine, but ive seen several renderings of this scheme, Chuck's is, what i would consider authentic, one of the first P-51 pictures i ever saw was the wartime color shot of LOU IV and the squadron in flight, Chuck's represents the colors correctly, IMO :D

Here it is at PRS June 2010, where Chuck qualified to participate in the Reno Air Races in September, nice job Chuck!

Thanks, That explains everthing! John Dilley of Fort Wayne Air Service purchased "What's Up Doc" from Ross Grady and restored it as "American Beauty" for Max Chapman to match "Mad Max". It was the last Mustang that John restored before he retired and was one of his bests. John Dilley/Tom Kelley had LOU IV #1&2 which #2 eventually ended up with Chuck Greenhill. It was sold and later crashed in Calif. and now is in rebuild in Canada. Lou IV #1 of Dilley's was turned into "Cutter's Cappers" then "American Beauty" with Renolds in Olympia, WA. Now Chapman's "American Beauty" gets turned into the correct color of "LOU IV" with Chuck Greenhill. I was told by a FWAS mechanic that Chapman wanted a special Mercedes green primer that costs $1,200/gal. It is probably one of the most expensive interior primers of any Mustang restoration in history.
So to sum it up, Dilley's "LOU IV" #1 turns in an "American Beauty". Dilley's "LOU IV" #2 goes to Greenhill and later sold/crashed. Finally, Dilley/Chapman's "American Beauty" turns into Greenhill's "LOU IV" #3 with correct paint. I hope everybody has got it straight because sometimes I even get confused. :Hangman:

Weeelll, that's why they created serials, registrations and construction numbers. ;)

Using names is fine when they're unique, but for Mustangs...

What? That has got to be one of the most confusing airframe history narrations I've ever read. This is how I prefer to document airframe ownership, registration, and marking histories:

Cavalier F-51D 67-22581

1968 - Constructed by Cavalier Aircraft Corp, Sarasota, FL
1968 - FA Boliviana as FAB 523 (Peace CONDOR MAP Program)
1977 - Recovered from Bolivia by Arny Carnegie, Edmonton, Alberta
- Registered as C-GMUS
1978 - Sold to Ross F. Grady, Edmonton, Alberta
- Marked as FAB 523/"What's Up Doc?"
1997 - Sold to Max Chapman, Kissimmee, FL
- Restored, Fort Wayne, IN
1998 - Sold to Max Chapman/Gardner Capital Management Corp, New York, NY
- Registered as N151MC
- Flown as 44-15459/HL-B/"American Beauty", "Lovely Lila" (tribute to Capt. John J. Voll, USAAF)
2007 - Sold to John O'Connor/American Beauty 1944 Inc, Aurora, Illinois
2010 - Sold to Chuck Greenhill, Kenosha, WI
- Repainted as 44-13410/E2-C/"Lou IV"/361 FG

I agree with Randy that "his" format is much easier to follow. Randy to add to your list.....Somewhere in the last few years of the American Beauty paint scheme, "Lovely Lila" was replaced with "Abigail Rose". Subtle difference, but still important for your book!

With all due respect to Mr Goodall, there's no such thing as a "Mk 2" Cavalier Mustang.

Thanks for the right side picture of LOU IV. I don't think I have ever seen an original right side photo of it. Maybe it would be nice to forward the picture to Chuck Greenhill for historical acuracy. Would that mean another trip to Sky Harbor for repaint on the right side this winter?

That picture came was cropped out of another picture by me years ago when I posted it in a modeling article on the ATHELENE markings. The original picture was one of a four ship flight, Col. Christian and 3 P-51's of the 376th Squadron (E9). And ironicly there is a B model in the flight that just happened to be the original "Impatient Virgin".
Chuck was unaware of this picture when his P-51 was painted but has been sent the picture. Here is the original photo of the 4 ship flight.
