it's amazing how scuba divers manage to cruise over unexploded ordinance in sunken ships, in confined areas, stirring up plenty of debri & loose muck, but luckily never manage to get blown up!! salt water is a much more unstable environment for old ordinance than compacted soil.

agreed,
I used to teach SCUBA diving off of Maui and there is a little crescent shaped island just off of Kihei between Maui and Kahaloowe, the name of it escapes me now.,. but during WWII it was a target for many aircraft., diving it many, many times there are hundreds and hundreds unexploded bombs all around the area.., the adjacent island, Kahaloowe I believe is still off limits due to all the unexploded ordnance.

I'd like to know more about how it went off. It sounds like they found it and were beginning to defuse it. Did the defusers trip it or did something bump it or what? I've always wondered about land mines and whether there are still some in Germany and France and other countries where they were planted. I know my Grandfather lost both of his legs in WW2 in Germany (I believe) from going off the path to take a short cut.
