FS/ANA colours to Dupont codes?

Thu Jul 28, 2005 6:03 pm

Hi!

The other day I tried to get some ANA 610 Sky colour for an unspecified project, ahem-ahem, and the chap at the auto parts almost laughed at my FS number.

I matched the thing with me own eyes, but there must be a way to decode the FS numbers into something that the car guys will understand, no?

I had a similar question (see this thread):

http://warbirdinformationexchange.org/p ... highlight=

My auto body paint supply folks had no idea what the FS595
system was. They even called PPG on my behalf, and the
(otherwise nice) tech lady there didn't have any idea what
FS595 was either.

My plan is to get some scraps of aluminum (maybe 4"x4"
square) and airbrush plastic model (FSXXXXX) colors/paints
onto said panels and let my PPG dealer use their spectrum
analyzer to spit out a recipie for whatever color I want.
(The plastic model guys are nuts  and are sticklers
for accuracy!).

I do have PPG colors for insignia red, white & blue, as I had
a photocopy of a page from a logbook of a T-6 which was
repainted with PPG paint (they used Alumigrip 1206 Silver
for the over-all color).

Here's a list I compiled awhile back (hope the formatting comes
across OK):

Insignia Yellow FS 13538 PPG DCC # ????? http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorserve ... p?fs=33538
Insignia Red FS 11136 PPG DCC # 74720 http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorserve ... p?fs=31136
Insignia Blue FS 15044 PPG DCC # 16017 http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorserve ... p?fs=35044
Insignia White FS 17875 PPG DCC # 98043
Bronze Green FS 34094 PPG DCC # ????? (anti-glare panel) http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorserve ... p?fs=34094
Light Green FS 14138 PPG DCC # ????? (inst. training bands) http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/colorserve ... p?fs=34138

I had a paint shop use a spectral analyzer to match the paint from fuselage panels on my Stearman, and they nailed it spot on. The panels that were in need of paint match perfectly to the ones that were very difficult to remove, but did not need painting.

Oh yes, my idea too.

I have loads of model paints, that's what I did with the Focke-Wulf, I used Model Master RLM 04, 71 and 70 to get the paint, but chose a "belly grey" for the underside, wheel wells, engine compartment and cockpit.

I hope my Sky eyeballing was any good!

Hi Ollie,

Try Sterling Lacquer Mfg in St. Louis, MO. They recognise FS Numbers.

Thanks Glenn.

I'll take that down for future usage!

http://www.polyfiber.com/where/

Get in touch with your local PolyFiber distributor. Airplane paint made for airplanes. While they are primarily known for their paint as a fabric covering the paint adheres to metal perfectly as well.

They can tint the product to match any FS, ANA, or RLM code you desire.
