Need Japanese Airfoil To NACA Conversion Index Or Online AP

Thu Aug 12, 2010 9:54 pm

Hi,

This is my first post to this site. A designer friend is looking for a conversion index or online AP to convert Japanese airfoils i.e. NN-21 to NACA airfoils.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Hey Ed,

Lester is actually looking for the coordinates for the NN-12 (not 21) as used on the Ki-43 Oscar. Not sure if there was an NN-21 or not but I'd hate for somebody to go through the effort of getting the information for the wrong airfoil! :)

Welcome to WIX by the way, great place to hang out if your a warbird fan.

Hi Chad,

Good to see someone familiar. Yes, The NN-21 is for the Raden a friend of mine is designing...redesigning as it were. He's wanting to use the NACA which is in the 2200 series...close to but not exactly the same as the 2208. I just realized unless an image is on my server or another url this forum doesn't have an image upload utility.... hummmm :)

Here is the NN-21. I found NN-12 while I was bottom feeding in the China Sea all evening trying to help John... :)
NO, I don't remember where...

I faced a similar problem on the Knoll. I had some small cutaway views from magazine advertisements. I imported these .jpgs into Autocad, then traced over the different views of the airfoils with the spline command, using the best average of the different images. I then printed that off on drafting vellum (onion skin). I then sat down and browsed all 1800 or so airfoils at http://www.worldofkrauss.com/foils/list ... er_page=60 . It isn't so hard, you can eliminate most of them with a quick visual by hovering your mouse over the name of the airfoil; it will throw a preview box up. If you are only browsing NACA's all the more easier. I then printed off the best 50 qty of the 1800, sat down and placed the drafting vellum over each of them until I found the perfect match. I was very happy because the match was German (GOE series) and of the correct time period, which fit the airplane's conception perfectly.

My mistake Ed. Lester had contacted me about the Ki-43 and I assumed he had contacted you as well.

Edward,

Thanks for the additional resource. In the world of quessing which the plastic kit manufacturers typically exist in its tuff finding validations. I have serveral airfoil software programs and a NASA engineer who gave me a unique AP...However there are very few NN-XX-XX-X NACA indexes.

This is a friend of mine from my research days, this guy's father designed the Ki-94. He might be able to get you some drawings. Very nice gentleman in Japan.

Chad,

Lester.... I know I should recognize the name Lester... Its not everyday we run into a Lester... :)
I found Ki-43 data references during my search. Teh 43's documented quite well. Back before the Japanese Aviation Resource site sent South about 5 or 6 years ago I had a Ki-43 link and focused article on the Ki-43 in ScaleAero.com.

What is Lester's last name...where is he?

Thanks!

I hope to find an online application program AP utility which will yield an appropriate NN- airfoil in the NACA numerical identity. Amidst all the conversion tables out there...the NN-X to NACA is hard to find.

The airfoil index and online utility Airfoil Investigation Data... http://www.worldofkrauss.com/foils/list ... er_page=60 turned out to be an excellent alternative to a less friendly one I discovered last year. I forwarded the NN-21 data for use.
