Dave, when a Merlin's been primed a bit rich it tends to send out a few flames. This was a grabbed shot after I saw the first attempt to start up which produced bigger flames but the engine didn't "catch". It was a matter of rattling off a few shots without any time to think about camera settings. I'm glad I caught it.

Tom,

I will leave that to the judges but I can't imagine any photographer passing on an opportunity like this where the mud and sun angle created such a magic photographic moment.

Canon 40D, Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM, B+W 86mm UV Haze 010 F-Pro Filter

The cockpit is a 1948 Curtiss-Wright Dehmel P3, Ground Instrument Trainer.
