Will do Pat.

It's ploughing season over here now, so for the next month or so most of the photos I'll post are likely to be surface finds from various bases.
(That's if I actually find anything. I was up at Deenethorpe earlier in the week and for the first time in 20 years I came home with absolutely nothing whatsoever after 3 hours of wandering! )

Brief update:
We're back at the original site again this weekend, with TWO tracked diggers and more manpower.
Let's hope we find as much this time as we did before.. :D

I'll report back after the weekend, so get your shopping lists in now. ;)

Back to these unidentified lumps:

These may be the exhaust damper units fitted to RAF 100 Group B-17s and B-24s, they look about the right size and shape.

All the best,

I had not thought of those being exhaust dampers. I believe you're correct after looking at a couple of references.

A lot of the problem with identifying them is the scarcity of decent photos showing them in place.
I guess that's why the various reference drawings of them, and the aftermarket model add-ons available, now appear pretty inaccurate.

OK all,

We have another dig coming up in a few days time.
This one will be another airbase general trash dump like the one last August, so who knows what will turn up... :)

PB

Please take and post plenty of pics, Paul. They're fascinating and quite poignant. This is my favorite thread of all.

Most enjoyable thread- Don't be shy of posting updates as you are able.

Bomberflight took me to Ridgewell and Grafton-Underwood this Summer and if I had all the time (and money) in the world I would love to help with Airbase Archaeology.
