I don't usually talk about seeing UH-60 Blackhawks since I see around 3 everyday, today as I was passing over the Sikorsky Bridge (Oddly enough Sikorsky's current location is just next to the bridge) one Blackhawk came from out of nowhere from under the bridge and flew right over. Nice little pick-me-up while on the way to work. :D

I saw a P-3 Orion today. Flew a wide circle pattern all day. Would come over my house every 30 minutes.

Saw 5 Super Hornets, a C2 greyhound, E2 Hawkeye, UH-1E, all at Ellington -Houston. Oh yeah, low level WB57 doing circuits at EFD, I mean 3-400 ft on their initial turnout !

Thats just off the top of my head.

An Antonov 124 made a rather dramatic (noisy!) 180 turn over the house last night (2115 hrs) on his final appraoch into Moffett Field. They come in about twice a month but last night he was especially low as our house shook! Went to Starbucks this morning and I heard several comments about "that large noisy plane that came over head last night". The Antonov engines certainly sound different than our turbofans.. really different.

Do they have that very distinct 'C-5' engine noise?

Actually that same 'C-5' engine noise could be heard from the Eastern L-1011 that used to fly over my house twice a week when I was a wee lad.

Won't be hearing those C-5 engines for too much longer. They are all going to be re-engined with updated engines. I'll miss that distinctive whiny-howl!

The engine noise of the Antonov is really hard to describe as it's nothing like a traditonal jet. The engine sound seems to rapidly undulate between high and low frequencies (growl then high pitch). C-5's and C-17 do occasionally frequent Moffett and I can tell the A/C type without going outside ( but I do anyway). The Antonov's almost always come in at night (mostly 3 or 4 am)and always awake us as it makes its 180 turn over head (the house shakes and out cats run and hide). According to a NASA friend of mine they fly from Central Russia to Anchorage AK (re-fuel and clear customs) then non- stop into Moffett Field. The AN-124's come here to pickup satellites that are made at the nearby Lockheed-Martin facility for transport back to their launch facility in Russia.

Here's a curious factoid:
Q: What does the Russian crew do while they have their 2-3 day layover at Moffett??
A. They rent a large U-Haul truck and make multiple trips to Costco! Fortunatly there are three Costcos with in a 15 minute radius of the Moffett front gate so plenty of selection.

So the next time you are in the bazaar in Tashkent and you will know where all the products made by "Kirkland" came from.

Saw what looked to be the DFW Wing's R4D "Ready4Duty" heading northbound around 1500' AGL over Garland just a few minutes ago. Looked neat in shadow against the morning sun.

Hey Zane,

I was aboard SC when you shot that photo! They were doing some training and invited VFM staff along for the ride. Here are some worthless photos:

Yours truly, hamming it up for the camera:

It's always a good day when you get to fly aboard a warbird for free! 8)

Cheers!
