Great pics, thanks for sharing. Lots of memories there. I grew up near Harlingen and went to Tech school at the airport, right next to the CAF. Used to go there during my lunch breaks some. Looking back I wish I had gone every day.

Anyone know the ID of that Mustang fuselage?

Pretty sure that is what is now the Red-tail "Tuskegee Airmen" airframe. That was purchased by the CAF up in Montana back in the early 1960s. An old buddy of mine went up there to make the thing airworthy and get it back to Harlingen. I have a black and while pic of it after they brought it back, and it was natural metal with just the stars and bars on it...so that matches up pretty close to what is shown there with it in the hanger...just faded about 20 years.

That's the Red Tail for sure. It was painted silver, not bare aluminum. The wings were cut off and welded back on just outboard of the fuel tanks to make it unairworthy, good for ground run only.
