Some time back TJ Johansen posted a nice old photo of N401Y parked on the ramp at Oakland, CA
I was curious about the airframe, as other than a Civil Registration Number and location, there wasn't any
and don't recall anyone responding to it (though I may be mistaken).
I went to the Feds to look, and it got this information.

Gary - As a side light, N401Y was based at Ortner's Air Field, Wakeman Ohio during the 1970's. After the Ortner Brothers business was dissolved, the Invader was eventually flown out by - I believe his name was - George Rivera to a western location. I'm sure the aircrafts' records are available through the FAA.... Leon

She's been up for sale for a long while. I belive that she is parked on the ramp at Rockford, Il, near Mark Clark's place. Last time I saw a listing, that's where the ad stated. It also said that there were a significant amount of spares as part of the package and they were located in Virginia.

Once again confusion reigns due to a clerical FAA error :rolleyes:
It's serial (msn) 28605, 29605 never having been built due to contract cancellation.
USAAF serial 44-35326 built for RAF but not delivered.
May have been transferred to USN as JD-1 BuNo unknown.

Yeah, the serial recorded with the FAA confused me a bit. I thought of a rebuild of the airframe like those used in the Vietnam era when those 44 frames became...what 64 frames, I also thought of it being a BuNo, but did the department of the Navy operate the Invader type aircraft? I dunno.
I believe this requires an eyeball to dataplate resolution.

It's only the FAA register which has the incorrect serial, all other sources agree on 28605 and its provenance seems clear.

The USN had 140 or 150 JD-1s (sources conflict), surviving ones being reclassified as UB-26Js in the services consolidation scheme.

However, there is no hard evidence of this particular airframe going to the Navy, just a notation in a couple of the lists. After all this time it's likely impossible to find the assignments between delivery and demob.

Now That!!! is a Very Nice Scheme, I would LOVE to see a 26 on the Circus pained up like that!

Palm Springs A-26 was (is?) painted in such Navy Colors. It is very cool to see.

Used to fly. Stored in the museum since and could be brought out of mothballs quickly I would think.

Given that it is the prototype Marketeer I still live in the hope that someone might restore this old bird back in the colors she wore when first made into an exec. version. As shown by gary1954's link further up in this thread.

And while we're on the subject, fix up the old Whittington A-26 N706ME currently in Las Cruces in its old yellow/white On-Mark demonstrator colors of the early 60s.

I had the chance to go through On-Mark N7079G as well as N26BK at Van Nuys a year ago. What a wonderful pair of exec. conversions with interior so nice it is almost unbeliveable. Hopefully more of these aircraft can be restored as such. There are still a good number of stock airframes that can be restored as bombers with all the bells and whistles.

A tired T J now steps off his soap box and goes to bed before leaving sunny California for a freezing cold Oslo tomorrow night. :Hangman:

I think it would be great to see an Executive version of any former Warbird on the Air Show Circus, to show the transition from the Classic War Machine, to employment as an Executive Flying Machine, restored in their original schemes. Who wouldn't want to pay for a ride in a plush pimped out Warbird?
