I found out first hand about idiots trying to pull their "Rank" over the event organizers. Those guys really take it too far and annoy me a LOT.

Anyway, I was there with a fan group, all of us in reproduction show uniforms I personally yelled at two of them to get back on their side of the line as they’re meant to be looked at, not climbed upon (or even photographed with flash photography, as that museum is pretty anal about that). Neither said anything back to me, I guess maybe they thought I was part of the exhibit staff, being dressed as I was.

WTF? Really? I say again, W......T........F'in..........F! There is, indeed, plenty of horror in this story.

Judging by the fit of those "uniforms", they still have Cheetos in the future. OMFG.

I'll never understand people that play dress up, be it science fiction or military. But especially science fiction. A twelve year old on Halloween? Yea sure but I just don't know how grown men and women can do that and look at themselves in the mirror and not think "gosh I look like an idiot."

Ok, as a longtime, if not current, (scifi) Fan and costumer, and now, in a lightweight fashion warbird owner/ prospective reenactor, I have to rise to this one.

Everyone plays dress-up.

If you wear a suit and tie to work, you are playing dress-up. The tie is a potentially dangerous anachronism, and the suit coat is just an encumbrance in a modern climate controlled office. But it's the costume that is accepted and expected in that workspace and if it helps your mental frame of mind to "Dress for Success" then it works for you.

The folks who wear formal clothes to go to church, to commune with God - who, we can rest assured knows what you look like naked, are playing dress-up

Ryan's wearing of a proper and appropriate uniform while displaying his airplane. Is he adding a touch of historical interest? Does it help him, and attendees, think of the services and sacrifices made during the conflict the airplane represents? Or is he just playing dress-up

The fan at a sporting event wearing the jersey of a favorite center or quarterback or what have you - is he supporting the team? Is he indulging in a little fantasy? He's just playing dress-up too.

The costumed SciFi Fan is no different than the guy at the football game or the guy in the office. He's wearing a suit appropriate, accepted, and expected for the venue. One big difference is that the suit is rarely an 'off the rack' item, so a great deal more thought and effort has gone into it than the office suit or jersey.

Kinda like the guy with the old airplane,eh?

Please do not compare Warbirding to dressing up in a scifi costume. It is insulting. There are forums for you people.

This forum is for warbirders.

I personally don't mind a 'period' costume for warbirders.

But dressing up as a Klingon if you are over the age of 14 is just frightening as heck! Period!!

I'm surprised he could find BDU's that fit him. Looks like they had to use a press to get that helmet on him. I go into battle with him. He'd make a nice cover to hide behind when the bullets start flying!

Just to be clear, I'm not equating what Ryan is doing with grown men dressing up as science fiction characters. I know Ryan and consider him to be a good man. I just don't agree with part of his hobby. As I said earlier, I don't like people wearing uniforms they didn't earn. It's not about them representing themselves as a specific individual so much. To me its purely about people wearing uniforms that other people worked awful hard to get in real life. Nobody worked too hard to become Buck Rogers in real life I don't guess. The people that dress up like him just strike me as very, very odd.

I had planned on elaborating on that point in a more formal introductory posting, but I think now I'll enjoy the fact that the secrecy will drive you nuts.

There are forums for you people." - No, what's insulting, aside from any use of the phrase "you people", is that a trumped up bean counter with daddy issues (read your own website) can believe that he should be the arbiter of what other people should find enjoyable, how they should spend their time and money and how they wish to share, or not share, the fruits of their endeavours.

Oh, and at least the fat kid is off the couch and doing something other that playing Call of Duty non-stop.

Thanks Brad. As noted, I take that perspective seriously enough, that I will be considering other options as to how I can keep the flightline free of "horror" for our active duty servicemen who really have worked hard to earn their uniforms. That doesn't mean I'm 100% giving it up, per say, but it is certainly going to be MORE obvious in some way that we are not "playing" soldier, nor claiming the hard work of others.
Now, can we please go back to our regularly scheduled programming for the thread? I'll add one more thing from the Lackland show. As mentioned before I had a number of kids in the cockpit, and always told them that they could not touch ANYTHING without permission as I wanted to be able to fly it out on Monday. It was surprising the number of them that directly went to yanking on the stick... Thankfully, I had a way to combat this! I would stand slightly behind them, next to the rear cockpit, and could grab the rear stick and keep it from moving - at least much. One time I tried to move the stick slightly, and realized that it wasn't just me keeping it from moving! Went around to the back of the aircraft to find two of our larger friends leaning up against the stabilizer and enjoying the shade while eating - oh, and it made a nice table for the hamburgers as well. I think I managed to stay polite, but that ended VERY quickly as well!
