Tue Aug 16, 2005 7:57 am

Rob,

How much of this wreck still exists? Did the USAF do a clean up after the crash?

I don't know where the Colonel is, but, as I have made several trips to the site, I'll try and describe it for you. I don't know what Pete gives for info on his site, but, as the aircraft plowed into the hill from just a few(200?) hundred feet, the impact site is spread out over about a quarter of a mile or more. The tail section( the vertical stab. being on another hill several miles away, as it's snapping off a low altitude was the cause of the crash. Two survivers, I believe.) being lower down the hill and the cockpit being closer to the top. It came down as the slope went up so that instead of leaving a crater it left a long skid-mark. Some of the area has been logged over and it is said that some sections were hauled away as scrap. The only recognizable sections, left at the site, are the tailgunner section, a flap panel, a section of wing and a main landing gear truck. The local snowmobile club has an engine and donated an ejection seat, that it also had, to another entity( ). everything else is in little tiny peices that one person can carry, and I'm sure that alot of it has walked off. Personally I think that all the big peices should be picked up befor someone decides to cut over that section of woods and makes the rest of the parts history. Somewhere I have some photos, if I ever find them I will post them. Rob?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally saw two small(just a few square feet) sections of the nose; one having a lower section of window frame and both having part of the SAC Milkyway. There was wiring everywere and I could recognize some of the radio, avionics and breaker panels from the cockpit area. I also found a deployed parachute. It's been several years since I paid a visit so my memory is a little vague(AND, I can't FIND THOSE CONFOUNDED PHOTOS  ) but it seems to me that there wasn't a lot of really recognizable stuff.

Don,

Thanks for the update.:!:

Sounds like the USAF cleaned up what big pieces were left (I'd imagine the vert. stab. for investigative purposes) and visitors picked the site over. It is amazing how much they leave. Wonder if they are more thorough these days.

Glad to see at least one seat go to a museum as we need to remember those that were ever vigilant in SAC and sacrificed so much.

Any photos (if you can find 'em) are appreciated.
