Aaaahhhh.... I tried to drive around to every side of the airport. I was even in the neighborhood close to that side but never actually saw the perimeter fence there. How did you get the shot? Did you need to do some walking?

Airport Rd is actually fenced off not far past Barkwood, so that is no longer an option.

Won't get a chance to try again this trip, but possibly will next month.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

WOW ! That 101 brings back memories ! It belonged to the 147th here in Houston. Those jets were so clean you could eat off of them. The guys won William Tell against F-4s with them. These are the jets that the unit transitioned to from F-102s.

Mike:

I drove into the parking lot near the control tower, and from there, there was a road leading to the North side of the runway, but still outside of the fenced-in area.

I parked my truck across the road, walked to the fence, and raising my arms high over my head, snapped a few pics.

There is this other airport in the RDU area, and if you look at the map below, you will be able to easily locate it. You have to exit the Highway, and head South for no more than a few feet, then make a left hand turn, and a dirt road will lead you to the airfield.

There were several Stearmans, PT-19s and if I recall correctly a PT-26 and a couple of T-6s as well as antique aircraft based there; they were under open-sided T-hangars; the field had the looks of having been there for a long time. The last time I was there though, was in 2003, and I do not have with me, the list of aircraft seen and their registrations.

If they had built the CN Tower in the middle of the prairies I would not be able to find it!!!

I visited the Wilson Airport looking for the UH-1B on the tip from Tulio. The tip was it was at an Army National Guard building. I found a United States Army Reserve Center on Airport Drive, but no Huey. I am guessing it was removed at some point. Oh well.

I then headed south to check out the Goldsboro airport and look for the F11 that Randy indicated was there. Well if it was there, it certainly was not obvious. There was no sign of it, and this wasn't a big place. It could have been in any one of the hangers. Strike two.

Tulio thanks for the tip on the other RDU area airfield. If all goes well tomorrow I may get a chance.

Mike,

I was last at the Wilson Airport in July 2003, and the chopper was still there. It was behind the building you found, but you could clearly see it from the parking lot. I walked to it and shot several pictures.

I keep remembering places:

Also, when you drive from Raleigh to Wilson, before you go by Zebulon, there is an airfield on the right side of the road, some 10 miles or less from Raleigh, you can see it if you look for a mobile home sales park; there were a couple of abandoned airplanes there (a Taylorcraft and a Piper Apache) as well as several other spam cans. The road map lists this place as the "Raleigh East Airport" (on US Hwy 64).

On Hwy 70 South, the Johnston Co. Airport had -had- a couple of DC-3s the last time I went by.

And, Oh! Just remembered! Inside the downtown Raleigh History museum, there was a Bensen Gyrocopter hanging from the ceiling of the atrium.

I didn't completely strike out today...

It is no longer a dirt road, but I found the place. I saw a Cub take off when I was there, and I saw a Stearman fuselage frame.

I didn't get to see anything there myself, but I talked to a guy who told me a Baseler conversion operates out of that airport. It was in a hanger, so I didn't see it.

Tulio...

I posted submitted the following question on an email list before I saw your original reply...

...and I got this reply...

Is there any chance you have the two mixed up? Relatively speaking the two airports are not all that far apart. My notes also indicate the same set of planes at Hickory.

I am headed home early tomorrow morning. I hope to be back in the area in about a month, so I plan on doing my homework before then.

Mike:

There is a very distinct possibility that they are at the Hickory Airport . . . Both airports are on the I-70 corridor, and I travelled back and forth between Greensboro and Asheville many a time, visiting airports along the way.

When you operate from memory like I do (and as it has been proven before here and elsewhere) I will tend to mix things up.

My most sincere apologies for sending you on a goose chase. Please, when you find these aircraft at Hickory, confirm it here.

Absolutely no apologies necessary Tulio! I am just glad to have access to a place like WIX and the people participating who are willing to share information. Memories are not always accurate and you have to take info with a grain of salt. Besides it is not all about the find, but the hunt as well that is fun.

If I get down that way next month I will certainly report what (if anything) that I can find.

I have posted my pictures (not that there is many).

You can view the Asheboro F-84 at...
http://community.webshots.com/album/431174701GVwnkw
...I didn't get into the museum as I arrived very late. Also it was very hot and humid that date. My shirt was soaked in 5 minutes and all I was doing was walking around. Hence this explains the heavy haze in the pictures.

You can also view the few shots I got at the Lake Ridge Airport near Durham that Tulio recommended...
http://community.webshots.com/album/431227005NVeNTz
...There are quite a few classic GA aircraft on the field. I was told that recently a Stearman restoration project had been moved from the field, there was still on Stearman restoration ongoing on the field (I didn't see it), plus the was also the Stearman fuselage that I took a picture of.

I think my main goal for my spare time when I visit next month will be visiting the museum in Charlotte.

Mike, if you make it to Charlotte, and feel like driving even more, the Hendersonville Airport (Hendersonville, NC) has a nice although small, collection of aircraft. This place is located south of Asheville (you know, the Biltmore Estate and all of that) plus the Blue Ridge Parwkay . . .

If you feel like driving a little more, South of Asheboro, there is the airport at Cheraw, SC.

They had three Jet Provost, a B.A. Bulldog and also a Folland Gnat.

This time, I verified my data, so you would not go on a goose chase !! : )
