Howdy, y'all.

I have been before to the Indy area, and have travelled far and wide, checking airfields and museums.

Lunken airport in Cinci is on my list of things to do this trip.

The question is, there is anything around Indy that I should go and see?

I have been to the USAFM in Ohio, to the Grissom AFB, to Seymour IN, and a couple of times to the Post-Air airport in Indy (both times, the hangar has been closed although the sign says open).

I am aware of the upcomin Indy Airshow.

Is there anything else worth seeing around here? Aviation-wise, that is. Warbirds? Monument airplanes?

Saludos!!!

Tulio

For a newer warbird...there is a GA field at Richmond (on I-70) with an A-6 on static. It landed at Wright-Pat and was towed early one Sunday morning on the freeway.

Thank you!

It is only 72 miles from Indy, and it looks either
doable on a day off, or as part of a trip to the USAFM or to Cinci!

Saludos,

Tulio

The Indianapolis Airshow is next weekend and will have a nice gathering of warbirds, military vehicles and reenactors.

Thank you, PJ.

I knew about the show, but it looks like I'll have to work over the weekend; I'll try to make it to the field at least for a couple of hours on Sunday, before work.

Saludos,

Tulio

Hi Tulio... there is also the Ropke collection. It is the largest private collection of military vehicles in the country. They have quite a few interesting aircraft outside in various conditions (mostly Vietnam era), but some pretty interesting stuff inside, including the X-14B (flown, and signed by Neil Armstrong). There is also a huge collection of military vehicles in running condition, including many tanks and various other beasties.

The trouble is, I can't quite remember where it is. I was in Indy working on a film set back in 2000 and just spotted it from the road on a day off. I do know that you can see it from the ring road (I465... I think) which runs around Indy. While it is a private museum, I just drove up, and there was a very friendly curator who just gave me the keys to the place and allowed me to walk around by myself. It really was a fascinating collection, and really worth a visit to anyone with an interest in military history. I'll try and find a better idea of the location Tulio, but maybe someone else here has a better knowledge of it.

Cheers,
Richard

Found it... made a spelling mistake. It is officially known as the "Ropkey Armor Museum". There are contact details, and it looks like you can make appointments to visit.

Hope this helps... it really is well worth a visit!

Cheers,
Richard

Tulio, be sure to call first. Rick Ropkey told me they sold their property and they were in the process of moving to a new location. Not sure what the current status is. I know the A-4 has been dismantled and moved to a workshop building that Rick acquired to do projects in.

Thank you!

I went near the location today on my way to work and made sure to locate the nearest intersecting streets for reference.

I will call before I head there.

Thanks again,

Tulio

Thank you, Eric!

Still pending on the days off for this week, although I found out that I will be working through the weekend.

I'll let you know as soon as I find out, and we'll go visiting airfields around Cinci!

Lots of aviation history there.

Saludos,

Tulio

Would appreciate a few pics and detail of any German armour they have.
