Lodestar mishap

Just saw a pic of Lady Lodestar on her belly over at Hyperscale. Anybody have any details?

not good news but damage look relatively minor, & the crash doesn't look to be of casualty status. hope i'm right. regards, tom

Looks like one prop on each engine isn't bent which might mean the engines weren't turning on impact or they quit rotating very abruptly before all three blades impacted the ground.

According to published reports, the accident happend yesterday(Sat Aug 13) and was the result of a hydraulic system failure. I have seen reports of anywhere from 4 to 8 people on board, thankfully all uninjured.

Man what is it with Lodestars I have taken pictures of crashing or crash landing, right after I left Midland on Sun after Airsho being a washout the Silver Lodestar crashed and now the Lady heh.

Broken Hydraulic line, lost brakes on rollout. hit ditch. Engines were shutdown.

To All,
Here is the start of e-mails concerning an incident with Lockheed Lodestar C-60A assigned to the Old Dominion Squadron of the CAF.

When: August 13, 2005 approximately 1100 Local
Where: Hampton Roads Executive Airport (PVG),
Chesapeake, VA
What: Lodestar 30N was involved in an incident during landing at PVG. The flight was a media event flight to celebrate VJ day. The aircraft departed PVG in the company of ODS Tracker 5234A and an L-4. The Lodestar had eight people onboard. The flight was normal and the Lodestar was first to land. During roll out there were no brakes. The aircraft departed the runway at the end, going into the overrun area. The aircraft came to a stop partially on the perimeter road, straddling a small ditch and in the over run about 100 yards from the end of the runway.
Authorities have been notified and first reports were taken by Virginia State Police. The FAA has been notified. There was no fire, no injuries to those onboard, no injuries to those on the ground, no property damage, the aircraft however is damaged. The extent will not be known until we have it back on it's spot.
When I departed the site, the Lodestar had not been moved pending the arrival of the FAA and everyone's concurrence that all issues had been addressed.
More to follow. What is going to happen as far as air shows and rotation is concerned is being worked on. When we will be able to fly the Lodestar again will be determined not only by what we have to fix but also by how much money we have to spend.

Thanks for the info on the Lodestar. Major bummer! Sounds like one of those wierd who woulda thought gremlins..... Glad no one was hurt and hope the damage isn' t too substantial. Glad to see 4 of the blades weren't too damaged. Hopefully the cranks will dial indicate ok and the engines will check out. Are those R-1820's on the Lodestar? Tom N

I just ran across this thread and wanted to reply to it. Yes, the Lodestar has 1820's on it. We actually have 3 blades that were bent, 2 on the left engine and one on the right. The engines were shut down but still windmilling when she hit. As for the status on the "Lady", we have started on restoring her but it will take several years and quite a few $$$$ to get her back in the air.

Well here it goes, I finally got brave enough to try and attempt to post pictures. Now that airshow season is over, we have started to work more on the Lodestar. The engines have been removed and are ready to be shipped off and inspected (as soon as we get enough money, around $50,000, they will be on their way), and she is finally standing on her own feet. We currently still have the jacks under her due to we are still waiting for one more casting on the right gear. Hopefully soon we will be starting on the structural repairs to the left wing tip, belly, and both nacelles.
