Warbird Information Exchange

With the recent heavy rains in California over the past week, did any aviation museums sustain damage? I saw video footage of an airport underwater with water up to the wings on some aircarft.

Seen it before. Many moons ago when the water started receding there I remember driving on Euclid toward Hwy 71 and having the water just touching the edges of the pavement on both sides along one stretch. With a partial moon low on the horizon it appeared like I was flying low over water. Looking off to the side showed nothing on the horizon but the reflection of the moon on the water. That must be back in 76 or 77.
At Chino the flooding would wash into the hangar but not to deep. Only problem was the water was the runoff from local dairies. A horrible smell to wash away and mop up.

Someone was killed driving on Euclid Ave. during the rains this year, right where they recently redid the road to solve all this (it took 6 months to do the work). She drove into a puddle that was 6 feet deep and didn't survive.

This and some other routes to Chino Airport were blocked from flooding, but nothing damaged on the airport itself that I am aware of.

This was back in 84-85 time period when I worked at Pacific Fighters.
It affected the hangars on the southend of the ramp more than any others IIRC.
I know things are a lot different now in both changes to the road/water collection and many fewer diaries.

I almost got creamed waiting in line to turn left onto Merril first day of the airshow this year. I was last in line & some guy in jeep came screaming up behind me not realising traffic was stopped in the lefthand lane. I was waiting to see what way he was going to skid when he hit the brakes so I could go the other way but luckily he slide past me on the right with everything locked.
Probably required surgery to get the seat cover out of his butt..

Many times I saw cars flooded with drivers standing up to their waists next to them in the vicinity.
A few times I saw a bumper sticking out of the water in the ditch on the North side of Merrill across from the airport. People wanted to drive on the shoulder to pass the long line of cars waiting to turn onto Euclid. Problem is an 8' deep ditch was full of runoff so there wasn't a shoulder. Big surprise!

Having had the misfortune to spend the past couple of years driving in LA (or the good fortune to survive it so far, depending on your point of view) nothing concerning the antics of LA drivers comes as a surprise to me any longer.

And don't forget about the people getting lost in the fog, turning onto the airport and ending up on the runway. Also saw the aftermath of a car that went straight across Merrill in the fog head first into the ditch.

I had a Jeep CJ-7 when I worked at Chino so weather and a fair amount of water wouldn't keep me from crossing some of those roads.
It took until about July, way past the rainy season, before I wouldn't smell the cow water smell when I started the Jeep each morning.
