Aleutian PBY catalina wreck

Sat Jan 01, 2011 6:50 am

Happy New Year to all!
A few years back(maybe 7 or 8)I found a website while strolling (as opposed to surfing) the net.It was pictures of a Catalina spread all over some island in the Aleutians. The wrecksite was pretty much untouched and even included some rather gory Human remain pics. I had the site stored in my old hand cranked computer and when it bought the farm. the address of the PBY site bought it too.Does anyone know of what I'm talking and have some info. Many searches later have turned up bubkiss.Tim

Hi agent86 - I think I can help here. What you describe sounds very much like the wreck of the US Navy PBY-5 BuAer04511 which is to be found on Kiska Island in the Aleutians. In addition to the aircraft wreckage, there are various personal effects etc there. I have a load of photos of the site (I have not been there) but I am not sure where they came from or if they were from a website. Google 'Kiska' and 'Catalina' or 'PBY' and you'll get some references including unit and crew details. Amazingly, the original manufacturer's plate was found in the wreckage and this confims the serial. It also shows the number '87' - BuAer04511 was the 87th aircraft in the batch BuAer04425 to 04514 although its c/n was 683.

Hope that helps.
