It's my understanding that both of the current engines are two that were bought a couple of years ago when a fire bombing operation went out of business. They were each sent up to be gone through/overhaul (kind of an IRAN/overhaul), one at a time. The right '90's engine gave up the ghost first, and was replaced, then about a year later the left gave it up and was replaced with the freshly gone through fire bomber one.

Only news I know of is the engine is at the rebuilders, and I think they are doing the tear-down now.

I might add that, if my memory serves correctly, both engines had at or over 1000 hours on them. They served very well. From what I hear, that's a lot longer than most R-2600's make it!

What is the down time estimated to be. Sure was nice to have her back in the air.., unfortunately for such a brief time

We all know you are working hard on this lady. It is much appreciated and we certainly can not wait to see her surrounded by blue sky.

The Yellow Rose Has An Engine!

A fresh engine for the Yellow Rose arrived at the hangar today! We plan to get started on the job of hanging it Monday morning. There is lots to do and we plan on doing it quickly but doing it right, and most importantly, doing it safely. Other than some hoses and some nuts and bolts, I believe we have everything on hand to get the Rose back in the air.

The engine was built by Carl Scholl at AeroTrader in Chino, California. Carl’s partner, Tony Ritzman, probably actually built it and it has been used to calibrate Carl’s engine test equipment. They assure me it’s a strong, solid engine. AeroTrader has the complete confidence of the folks in Midland, who have been a HUGE help in getting this worked out. I know them both well and I am completely confident in their work and the engine.

Jim Liles is working hard on overhauling some jacks that better suit the size of the Yellow Rose and will be much, much safer for brake and bearing work and retract tests. Jim and I will get the hydraulic mule cart serviced in the next week so it will be ready to complete the B inspection once the engine is installed.

We hope to be back in the air with fully re-qualified pilots by Mid-March, earlier, if possible, of course.... More info coming soon!

Just a few photos of the new engine being un-crated and placed on an engine stand...

Here it is right out of the box!

Then hung from the big forklift with care...

Now, its on the stand and being inspected by Yellow Rose Squadron Leader Greg Young.

Finally, just looking great on the stand.

Monday, we got several of the accessories on it and the engine mount loosely installed. We hope to hang it on the Rose on Wednesday, March 2. I'll keep you updated!

Ray.....that is all good news and I hope that engine runs and lasts as good as it looks.......but what a TEASE! The rest of us have been dying for some "Cobra" news.... and here is that "purty" new engine strategically positioned so that both "Cobra's" are in the background.... sheeeesh...... come on Ray.... we need a 'Cobra update! alan brooks

I don't know about the status of the shirts, though I have ordered a couple and know of many other people in the hangar that want them.

Kelly's grandmother passed away unexpectedly a few days ago. They were close and we haven't heard much from Kelly either.

A little over a month ago, her gall bladder went haywire and died. It was poisoning her and she was in great pain. She finally quit fighting it and went to the doctor. When he examined her and realized what was going on, she was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. She was told that she might not have made it if she'd waited a few hours more. They also told her that she had an amazing tolerance for pain. She has almost completely recovered and made a brief appearance at the hangar a couple of weeks ago.

We miss her and need her help installing the new engine on the Rose. We expect she'll be back in action at the Cobra Den soon.

I'll try to get a Cobra update out tonight...
