need parts?

Fri Feb 04, 2011 3:08 pm

I am trying to gauge how much interest there would be to purchase good, new production airworthy parts. I have recently partnered with a large machine shop that can handle large production runs for the aero-space industry. We are looking to do Mar & Hydro Forming, punching, milling etc. Our subdivision will be based in the Mid Atlantic area and will be USA owned and operated. The current shop operates under FAR Part 121 for inspection processes.

We are looking to fill a need, but the question is what do you need? We are looking at short run sets of parts to start with. We can reverse engineer and pattern of your original. I just need to prove a demand and we can fire things up.

There's 21 new-build Fw190s looking for BMW 801 engine parts. Maybe a Jumo 213 or two also. 8)

If that German group successfully gets the Greenland P-38s, somebody will be looking for P-38 parts, too.

T-6 attach angles are in short supply.

Thanks for all the input.

Does any one have a good front and back photo of a P51 Spinner / Prop Backing Plate.

How about the attach angles?

I'm surprised there were not more suggestions regarding interior parts like map cases, brackets, pedals, etc which we could potentially do a run of.

it would be nice drew if somebody needed 40 spare spars for a corsair!

Frank,
I appreciate your levity but this is a serious discussion. Obviously 40 extra Corsair spars would be nice but I don't think there are that many Data Plates collecting dust in your collection.

Cheers!

We are already manufacturing the wing center section upper inner and outer bolting angles (these are the ones in short supply). And we are having the extrusion dies made for all the other angles at this time. We are currently working with the Los Angeles Aircraft Certification Office for a PMA on these parts.

At this time these angles will not make the AD go away although we are working on improved designs and materials for the lower front bolting angle which some of the studies say is the weak point.

I can tell you that the Aeronca community (primarily the thousands of post-war Champ and Chief owners, including the L-16 folks) are struggling with the wing rib problem. The aircraft uses 5 aileron bay ribs per wing and 7 main wing ribs per wing. Original ribs are now 65 years old and are worn out. It would require two sets of dies to press these ribs since the aileron bay ribs and the main ribs interchange between the left and right wings.

There are PMA'd new ribs, but they are configured for the later aircraft - late Champions, Citabrias, etc. and are pre-punched for 1/8" pop rivets to attach the fabric. That isn't an allowed modification on the early Champs and Chiefs, so the new ribs have to be patched so they can work with the PK screws which are correct for the aircraft. That is insult to injury - you spend $100 on a replacement rib, then have to spend an hour or two modifying it so it'll work. Also, the new ribs are from .032" aluminium, not .020", like the originals, so you're adding weight to an aircraft that can't afford it.

If someone could produce PMA'd ORIGINAL style ribs (or non-PMA'd ribs, under the "owner produced parts" rules), that would make a lot of Aeronca owners very happy. I imagine you could sell hundreds per year...

PM me and I can send you factory drawings of the ribs.

PM me and maybe that is something we can look into. If the parts are not attached to an AD, then it would be real easy to add to our PMA.
