Belly tank? Seriously? Were they actually used during wartime training flights?

Taigh has spoken: Add one PV-2 and one Secret Navy Bomber as chase plane.

Believe it or not yes there was such a thing.
Don't know the history of their use and have not tried to research it
Imho, I think it may be prewar which means model 1-7 Fleets. I have never seen nor heard that the RCAF used them on Fleet 16bs but it could be easily mounted.
I obtained it from a collector a few years ago who gave it to me when he learned that I had a Fleet biplane
The best way to describe it is " a slipper tank" that mounts flat against the belly and is shaped like a half teardrop when viewed from the side. A wobble pump was used to get the fuel up to the top wing tank.
I have only one ran across a picture of a Fleet biplane with one installed.
The tank I have is restorable but I have never gotten around to doing it.

Well, I'm definitely looking forward to this year. It always good to meet up with old friends. Chris, I for sure will be there to toast Clair. He will be missed this year for sure. It looks like a decent line up already. Oh, and David, the first annual "Warbirds and Tilted Kilt" sounds good, as long as we can still do our annual sortie after the WIX gathering. :D

And how about FIFI?

This article from EAA suggests "yes":

http://www.airventure.org/news/2010/100728_fifi.html

Current newsletter/tour schedule doesn't have OSH listed:

http://www.rideb29.com/images/stories/F ... %20web.pdf

Anybody confirm?

The EAA article is SEVERAL months old while the newsletter is pretty current, so it would seem more likely that at least at this point the B-29 is NOT coming to Oshkosh. But that could change, and it would certainly make sense to have FIFI be there. I know that the HFF "EAL" DC-7B is tentatively scheduled to be there again, and I would like to see as many big 4-engine prop warbirds and airliners there as possible.

Not really warbird related, but it is an AirVenture update....just announced today, REO Speedwagon will be the opening musical act on Monday July 25, courtesy of the Ford Motor Company. On Friday July 29, Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will be returning for a concert at Theater in the Woods. Jenn and I will be hosting the annual AirVenture WIX Gathering and Cookout/BBQ again, most likely on Thursday the 28th. There will be plenty of hotdog salad for everyone courtesy of Matt Jolley and Warbird Radio!
