What airplane did you see flying today?(airplane spotting)

Tulsaboy, my five year old grandson refers to Lone Star's Thunderbird as "the big green airplane" and all and I mean ALL are "grampa's friend's airplane." :lol:

I didn't see it, but I heard it. . . some kind of large, slow-moving aircraft powered by at least two sweet-sounding, big-inch radials, lumbering along from east to west at relatively low altitude, passing by a 1/4 mile or so north of my house at about 7:30 PM. I'm guessing it was only up about 2,000 feet or so. I stood on the front porch and watched its lights disappear into the west. The lighting was minimal: position lights on the wingtips, white light on top of the vertical, and a red rotating beacon on top of the fuselage. No strobes. The plane was definitely not in the pattern for D/FW, for if it was, it would have been flying south over my house, not west, since I'm due north of the airport and directly under the approach. I dunno what it was, but it sure sounded nice and had me wishin' that I was up there with 'em!

(it was probably a DC-3; it didn't sound "mean" enough to be a Convair or a Big Doug, and I doubt it was a warbird)

It may have been the American Airlines DC-3. They landed and parked at AFW about 2015.

When the local T-6s go over our house (right in the flight pattern) my girls look up and ask, "are those your friends, daddy?"

Did a ground run on the CF F-4 yesterday. While we were on the ramp a Basler BT67 (DC-3 turboprop) took off. It had spray bars under the wings and carried the name Airborne Support. Apparently it's new, and will be stationed at Houma, Louisiana to do emergency response to oil spills

Also saw what has to be one of the last White Rocket painted T-38s land and park on NASA's Ellington ramp. Tail codes ED.

A good day for me, all spotted from my work in League City:

11:34 3 F-18s from east to west then looked like they landed at Ellington

12:45 B-17 from southeast to southwest also looked like he landed at Ellington

16:42 B-25 circling over League City

If you are in the Dallas area this weekend, you can visit "FIFI" and SEE Ol' 927 take to the air! There is at least one passenger flight on Saturday, then the rest of the weekend some of our pilots will be regaining their currency. Come on out if you want to see two of the rarest bombers!

The Collings TA-4 did 3 EFD-GLS local flights today. One of our trainees last flew an A-4C over Viet Nam 43 years ago. He said it was just like riding a bicycle !!

I caught part of that Rick, about 5pm. They made me work for that one...after about twenty minutes of run-around which
started at approach to the 45 south exit from 610, I caught Sharpe at the top of the 610 bridge over the channel with the C-17 following at that point. The sun popped out and revealed the distinctive green of the Sharpe gooney as it approached before the turn over the bridge....neat stuff. Ya'll had us rubbernekkers goin...very cool! :lol:
