T-6 fuel question

Has anyone ever heard of replacing the wobble pump with an electric fuel pump?

Not aware that any of the T-6s at Chino have any such thing.

Why would you want to do this?

Yes.
Local T-6 has one.
I have no recollection of the details (like what pump, mounted where etc etc).

Vlado-

Of course it is possible... but not in the TCDS and I am not aware of any STC for it either... so to remain in the Standard Category you'd have to get a Field Approval (pay for a DER to produce the data... the FSDO reps do not stick their necks out anymore)... or make the airplane experimental.

Tired of pumping<g>?

I've flown one or two that are like that Vlado. It was pretty awkward as I recall! I don't know much about the set up, but I was thinking they had it where you could use the wobble pump if the electric went out?

I knew of one that had a electric pump and could not figure out the reason behind it. The wobble pump works very well, easy to maintain, and reseal if needed.
The only thing about a T-6 fuel system is knowing if you have a T-6 single line system, or a SNJ two line system, and not have the parts from each intermixed.

I have seen it. I did the conversion,still dont know exactly why the owner wanted it done. The 337 was approved
by the FSDO. Not a big deal.

Well it is a big deal and it isn't a big deal. FSDO's, at least the ones I am familiar with are not forthcoming in their willingness to do a Field Approval. If you know otherwise.... share the wealth... a good FSDO is hard to find.

However, if as you say there was one done in the past... and you have the 337 to show it... fairly recently the FAA changed their approach to maintaining Vintage Aircraft... back in May 2009 they came out with AC23-27. Checkout that document and with a previously approved 337 as approved data you just might be able to install the electric pump as no big deal.

Vlado,
Check the packing around the wobble pump shaft, it is a graphite impregnated string type, if it is bad, you can have a hard time building up pressure. Lance or Banaire should have a rebuild kit for it.

Vlado-

Try motoring the engine while wobbling... that way the engine driven pump adds to the equation. It is what I do....
