I've got nuthin' to hide.
My real name is James Bradley Eney. Born 6/17/1935. New London, CT. How's that? Everybody happy now?
My friends call me Brad. I'll stick with Mudge here 'cause it's origin suits my demeanor more closely than does Brad.

Mudge the open

From my experience on various forums Gunny does have a point. There isn't a problem with good members like Mudge hiding behind screen names, they aren't hiding. But a lot of the forum troublemaker types do hide behind screen names to make their trouble anonymously, and those guys wouldn't do it if their real name was required. I know of one forum that allows screen names but requires real names on the member profile page, which seems like a good option to me. My 2 cents.

I think this is a great idea, like the poster said people might think a little more before they post using their real name instead of a handle.

Cheers Dave

I don't get the logic in that. Why would it have more meaning/impact if someone said they were "pi$$ed off at Brad" rather than "pi$$ed off at Mudge"?

Mudge the illogical :Hangman:

basement if couldn't hide behind his screen ID of BARBARIAN whenever he posts.

but all it really does is open innocent people up to harassment and abuse. This will still be the internet and putting private informatino out on it will still open you u to abuse by all who read it. Mudge you (for example) can use your name all you want but if I wasn't very ethical I could take it and use it to defraud you and to use your identity for nefarious purposes. Besides, what is stopping me from using a fake name? I always wanted to be Barton Finkelstink. You all can call me Barton from now on.

I hear ya MB but I don't see that. I've never had a issue with that and never heard of
anyone on this board having any issues. I really don't think the sky is falling in that regard.
But then again Jack is not my real name  :)

OK lemme' do it this way. Does saying, "My name is Brad and I hate your guts you bitchslapping keyboard jockey" mean there's more of a threat to me than if I said, "My name is Mudge and I hate your guts you bitchslapping keyboard jockey"?

Mudge the bitchslapping keyboard jockey

Jack, (or whatever your real name is), that phrase just cracked me up. :drink3:

I think you guys miss the point.... using a real name does not equate to forcing the same opinion on any subject.... and in fact this is the real world, maybe even the partially grown up world.... did you miss the point that I've been on a forum that requires it since before either of you graduated High School (most likely, I have no idea how old either of you are)? My experience is that there are always folks that will step on their own .... regardless, but using a real name does in fact put a damper on those folks without the courage to claim their shots.

If you want to try and steal my identity.... go ahead and try.... a rather weak attempt at humor Muddy, try again....

See, we're disagreeing and not defaming.

I agree too much id theft.

I also see too much of a scammer abuse potential.

I was nervous meeting Tulio. What would he be like? Would he want to rob me or steal my stuff?

unfortunately you are operating under the assumption that everyone wil use our names with tact grace and honesty. Not everyone does or will, so I'll stick with muddy.

Well then keep it the way is then, it was just a suggestion to help keep this place civil. The logic is most people that hide behind false names are braver than the ones using their real names.

Seems most here are happy the way it is with all the poor behaviour, so ill just go back to lurking and enjoy how much people act like fools here.

Cheers Dave

I understand your suggestion, but i think the are too many really bad folk out there just waiting for you to be away at an airshow. Then they can show up at your house and take your stuff assault your family, etc.

I think it is a bad idea for that reason.

Not too worried here. My screen name includes my real name, but is just enough off that someone MIGHT not get it. The bottom line is that civility has to be enforced to an extend, but can never be perfectly enforced, either, unless serious measures are taken. A friend of mine once said that where there is no sanction, there is no law.
I do know of at least one airshow circuit pilot who was stalked by another WIX member... Please don't do that to me. Neither of us will enjoy it.

Quite right, but civility is one thing, and stalking/breaking and entering another. Words don't cut like that knife they may have to my wife or kids.

You be surprised how easy it is to find you address. Auditor's web sites, even the FAA site if your aircraft is in your name.

Like I said I suggest to my forum posters to use real names. It has nothing to do about protection. It's more about keeping the place friendly and helping out to remember names. I have never had a problem and my full name has been on thousands of posts and several forums since 2001. I have never heard of any problem using your full name.

Cheers,
Nathan Milarta
