tonight's nbc nightly news w/ brian williams showed some film footage of libyan rebel ingenuity!! mounting an aircraft wing mounted rocket pod to the roof of a pick up truck!! must have been powered by some sort of battery hook up. i just got a glance of it, looks like it had at least 12 launch tubes. probably russian. try msnbc.com for footage.

Russians have used versions of the Katyusha truck mounted rocket launcher for around 90 or so years.Pretty mobile, inexpensive barrage weapon, danged effective too!! crank 'em out like sausages, if they get blown up, no large investment loses. 'Yuri? Yuri who? never knew him'.

We used a simular truck mounted version during WW2, even mounted a version on top of the M-4 RONSON LIGHTER...er...SHERMAN Tank and also used it in Korea. What you probably saw was one of the latest versions the BM-21, the 'exported' version supplied to 'customer' countries by the Soviets.

this one was pea pod shaped that would be mounted on an aircraft pylon. would be great to have during rush hour on interstate 480 near cleveland hopkins airport at rush hour, & that part of 480 is a notorious speed trap for ticket happy barney fifes!!

I have some serious doubts concerning the accuracy of a rig like this.might be more deadly to the shooter than the shootee

I'd imagine whatever happened would be both bright and quick :)

I had to laugh when the news showed the shot of the rocket launch from a pick-up that had the guy's bedroll tied to the tailgate. First launch and poof...bedroll in flames. That back blast is a killer.

Yeah, but keep in mind these guys are not, for the most part that technically savvy. Except for a few who may have toted an AK while under conscription, primarily they are tribal and more used to taking down the tent every morning and hitting the sand than dealing with the physics of modern ballistic properties.

One brave guy was interviewed by a TV reporter and showed the reporter how he was armed, a small knife and just the clip from a pistol and he was facing up to armor and artillery, would you? Another guy was armed with a plastic toy gun 'here, take an extra roll of caps and go get that T 80 willya?'

Pretty funny when you're fighting for your life with handsful of rocks isn't it?

Now I'm not saying these guys arent brave, they are. but what is the point in taking on a T-80 with a cap gun and a knife?.lets give them some AK's (which we have lotsa) and showem how to use em.one canister shot from a T-80's cannon will turn the cap gunners and knife fighters into a red fog.whats the point? making a gesture of defiance? wont win wars doing that, just kill lots of brave people

Well, my guess and question would be, just how desperate are you to get out from under a tyrant who's ruled over you for most if not all your life when you've just looked @ what transpired next door with their dictator? How bad do YOU want to be free? would you go up against trained, armed soldiers with your bare hands if it meant that maybe you could draw a free breath? Not fear 'disappearing' of your family for no known reason? To not fear being dragged in and tortured because today you chose to wear a blue shirt and unbeknown st to you, the Police had orders to arrest and question everyone wearing a blue shirt? And where 'questioning' isn't like what you see on Castle or CSI but real, hard, teeth knocked out and fingers smashed, gouge out an eye 'questioning' by people who really don't want answers but just like to see how much you can scream and how much you can take before they kill you style questioning.

Would you go up against tanks to stop that? Stop dismissing it like it's a TV movie because it isn't to the thousandth power.

I understand your passion, but I think you need to take a deep breath and calm down. no one here was belittling these folks, least of all me.I believe that this post was about an aircraft rocket pod mounted on a pickup truck and has become a forum for you to rant. this is not the section of WIX for your ranting. theres other locations here for that. Why dont you start a post there and share your point of view there. Sheeesh!

Canister rounds from a T-80? I can see canister coming from a D-30. Rounds used by the T-80 are APFSDS, HEAT or HE-Frag. The Anti personnel weapon on the T-80 are its machine guns the 7.62 mm PKT coax MG and the 12.7 mm NSVT or PKT antiaircraft MG

one of my best friends was a gunner on an M-48 tank in vietnam .He told me about blasting VC with canister rounds and the mess they left behind.I just figuered that the same must go for all tanks but guess i'm wrong.Maybe fighting in jungle make canister the round of choice for anti-personnel.
