I'm really embarrassed when pilots like this guy make decisions like this. Listen to the tower recording and you'll see what I mean.
This guy is exactly the kind of pilot we don't need. What was this DI_K thinking!!!!

Today's NY Daily News is reporting that the aforementioned pilot was rushed to the hospital from his home after suffering a seizure. That could explain a lot.

Of course now there will probably be pressure on the FAA to require pilots to undergo CAT scans as a routine part of the medical.

Boy, the other incident with the United Airbus sounds like a SNAFU on the part of the airport. They have an aircraft with 106 souls on board declare an emergency and they can not move their fat arses, cones and vehicles out of the way. What a joke!

Lets see now, the emergency with UAL 497 took 12 minutes from start to finish ('Harry, we might have an issue here' to 'there, we've stopped!'). I've never seen earth moving equipment that could qualify on the pole @ Daytona it's usually pretty slow even with the pedal mashed to the floor of the cab, coupled with the tower needing to contact the contractor on the runway after getting the declaration from the crew (time has, and is passing rapidly) the contractor IS required to monitor tower or Ground. Then the contractor needs to contact every operator of equipment on the runway (more minutes sliding down the chute to never be seen again) and I seriously doubt they were all gathered in a circle to play pinochle, aircraft noise, machinery noise, dust, confusion, large dump trucks, "NO-I SAID......."(confusion and misunderstanding of what's being said, something about being around really loud machinery and louder jets all day, more precious minutes gone) So you could very possibly be not completely correct in your assessment of the entire situation, and might wish to reassess your opinions of the MSY incident and the timing involved in making things happen (it's real life, real time, not a movie scene)-adding to the issues in N.O. are the fact that LAKEFRONT has been closed since Katrina and NAS Callender is too far away across and down the river. And if it's been raining (does that a LOT there) don't leave the pavement! or you will be up to speed on gumbo mud and just what it will and will not suport, something about no rocks or gravel in the soil, just river slit from Minneapolis-OH! Look, all the minutes have disappeared!

This was just 'maintenance' not a runway reconstruction. It is a weak link in their communications. This was the longest runway in their inventory and in the event of an emergency it should have been able to be made available in 5 minutes. Someone got their ar$e handed to them on a plate for this. This could have developed into a disaster very easily. Fortunately, with the skill of the aircrew, it did not.

There are lessons learned from this incident.

I think the biggest lesson to be learned from this incident is to not point fingers without all the information. Do we know how many men and vehicles were on the runway? How about the number of cones? The type of vehicles? The types of tools?

You are right, mate! Boy you are exactly right. So let's get that inventory and we can come to the same conclusion about how they must have communication lines with the tower at all times in the event of an emergency like this one.

Or is that too strong of a requirement for you?

Did you listen to the recording? They did have a direct line of communication. They were attempting to clear the runway of all obstacles. The issue was the plane had to land, and had to land now... not in the minute or two more that the runway repair crew needed. Fire in the air is a serious thing. I can understand them wanting to use the 10000 ft runway, but 7000 isn't too shabby when the plane might be on fire and its your only option.

I think the kid is losing his license!
