I agree, that is about the best you could do to get around the legality and keep some semblance of the original markings.

...... another highlight in 2011 !

The Supermarine Spitfire (LF) Mk.XVIe -TE184- arrived the 20th April 2011 at MeierMotors !

This fantastic plane was bought by Stephen Stead and will be stored and maintained at MeierMotors /EDTG . Stephen is also the owner of the fantastic Yakovlev Yak-3 "White 5" D-FYGJ stored at MeierMotors.

Matthias
Thanks for the great photos and information and the huge impression of enthusiasm and love for what you do.
A question on the Spitfire prop - what are the strips on the leading edges?
I've not noticed on other prop photos the way that they overlap the yellow tips.

Blades are of a wood construction. The wood has a resin covering and the leading edges are protected by the strips you see.

Some updates concerning the second Focke Wulf project at MeierMotors... as I told you before, this is the ex-Tom Blair Fw190 from Duxford. This ship was sold to a German Collector and MeierMotors got the task to bring it to flyable condition with German Registration. Theses days the plane was ready for roll-out and for the first enginetests.

At first some pictures from the cockpit. Quite different to the Yagen-Focke Wulf

but also old revised instruments

Roll out of WkNr980554 15th April 2011

The owner choosed a different radiator solution as Jerry Yagen. At this airframe there is installed a ring-radiator with a new airflow-system. The radiator ist new constructed with a bigger surface and a bigger "oilcontent". Also this plane has the huge oiltank in front of the windscreen (124ltr). All those ideas and new solutions were "transported" from Yagens fighter to this plane.

At first .... teamwork

What is up with the polished cowling and rudder (and how do you polish fabric)?

the rudder is painted in a sort of chrome-finish ... a hell of work but looks great ... the cowling is polished

Does that reflect an authentic scheme somehow? The FW-190 has a pleasing shape, I think one would look really cool all polished!

If you have any details on the chrome painted fabric, I'm curious to learn about it!

I saw that chrome effect applied to a hot rod on Street Customs TV show the other day. They start off with a black undercoat and then apply some type of state-of-the-art top coat that creates a mirror finish. Prety cool stuff to see on a warbird. VERY hard to make it turn out right, as I understand it.
