CBS News refers to the Iowa @ 887 feet long and 45000 tons as a 'boat'!?! To them does that make Mexico City 'a nice sized town'?
I was on a boat 1000' feet long and 100,000 tons displacement

I know, a sewer pipe is also referred to as a 'boat', but those are both 'insider slang'. The accepted dimensions by nautical folks are if it's over 156 feet in length, it officially is referred to as a 'ship' under 156 and it is technically a 'boat'.
But let's put the pepper sorting aside, I'll assume there's no fly poop in it.

What is really sad is that less than 10 miles from where she is berthed is the ex Mare Island Naval Shipyard. The first Naval Shipyard on the West Coast. Home to the Pacific Fleet for many years. Built the Carrier platform on the USS Pennsylvania; was the site of the first Carrier take off ( History books say in San Pablo bay, which is the body of water adjacent to the base), and landing. Built the hull that became the first US Carrier. Constructed the USS San Francisco, the Second most decorated ship in US Naval history. Built more of the top 10 scoring US Subs of the War, and many, many other historical first.
The Navy actually WANTED to put it in Vallejo. They thought one of the old Dry Docks would be Ideal. The PEOPLE of Vallejo wanted it there, most of whom are either retired Navy, or ex Yard Dogs. Unfortunately the City Council couldn't find a way to line their own pockets by having the USS Iowa come there, so they turned it down. It also did not help that a small local museum thought that if the Iowa was there it would steal from their thunder.
The local politics of my old home town make me sick. This is the same town that became famous for becoming the largest city in US history to become bankrupt. Yet they saw "no economic benefit" in bringing the Iowa to Mare Island.
