R-4360 induction systems

Mon May 02, 2011 10:33 pm

Does anyone have an online source (or print source, for that matter) with detailed graphic representation, in either diagrams, drawings, or photos, of the engine/turbosupercharger installations of the following aircraft?:
Northrop XB-35
Convair B-36
Republic XR/XF-12
Douglas DC-7C
Lockheed Super Constellation

Thanks
Shaun

You might try AEHS Aircraft Engine History Society @ www.enginehistory.org they have an impressive amount of aircraft engine info from day 1 up to now.

Thanks, I'll give them another look. I've seen their site a few times, they had some interesting stuff.

While your title refers to R-4360's...., the Douglas DC-7C and Lockheed Super Constellation had Wright R-3350's installed.

There are 2 books that may be helpful to you. The first is a book about the B-36 called "Magnesium Overcast" by Dennis R. Jenkins and the second is a great book by Graham White on the engine entitled "R-4360 Pratt & Whitney's Major Miracle". It has a section on the engine installation on the B-36 with many schematics. It also has a couple of pages in it about the Republic XF-12. Hope this helps.

Scott: Thank you. I will definitely pick up the "Magnesium Overcast" book, I've seen it available for not too much. As for Mr. White's books, they are great, but last time I checked the price on the R-4360 book it was like $250. Limited run.

Mike: Yes, I realized the error in my post's title after I published it. Yes, I realize the Connies and DC-7s used R-3340s, in some cases turbo-compounds. I should have titled the post "Large American radial engine induction, turbosupercharging and turbocompounding systems diagrams and photos wanted". Forgive the oversight.

I don't know where you got your info on the White book, but you could not be more wrong. Amazon has it on stock now for $61.52,
http://www.amazon.com/R-4360-Pratt-Whit ... t_ep_dpi_3

It's hardcover. I got my copy for Christmas in 2009.

Well I see it's paperback now. :(
Still worth it though. I guess I'm glad I got a hardcover copy. :D

Yes, I saw the soft cover on amazon today. Seriously considering it. Should have gotten the hardcover when it came out.
