Re: WWII Fighters and Bombers Still Outside?

Didn't EAA have a Skyraider and an F-84 rotting outside?

Yanks B-25 is not outside.

Pat Carry, what do you mean by "twice" in reference to Chino?

B-17's at Lackland, Eglin, Barksdale, Dyess, Grissom, Chino (twice), Offut, Castle, Milwaukie,Or, Tulare,Ca, March, and in Brazil

Lots of stuff outside in Beijing but I suspect much of it will be going indoors soon.

It is about 90% real, just not all the parts are from the same airplane. It is also gutted. This is a little like saying a VW bug with a fiberglass fender is not really a bug.

Here's the registry entry for the F6F at Andrews.

I'd love to hear more information on how much of the aircraft is original and what parts are manufactured or replica. It looks like it needs to come in from the cold either way. I'm assuming the Navy still owns the airframe?

Piccadilly Lilly and Swamp Ghost (at least, part of it) I'd guess

I'd temporarily forgotten about that! I thought maybe the EAA's B-17 was one of those, but it was just visiting a few weeks back. Is it ever hangared?

The EAA Skyraider is now with another museum and under restoration. I can't remember where though. The F-84 and the few other jets they have do come in from time to time. The B-17when not flying does have a hangar over across the field in the Weeks area.

The Hellcat at Andrews could not be taken down and restored to fly because there is so little actual Hellcat parts in it. I was told that even alot of the exterior is mock up

I would say in the next 15 years or so there will be a mass scrapping of many of these aforementioned planes because they are just going to fall apart.

Of the remaining PV-2's, I can think of only 2 that are stored inside....Yes, the shear size of them turns them into white elephants..neat to look at, but quite a liability to keep covered. If and when I win the lottery, I know of four Harpoons I'd put inside.

Not sure if it is on your list or not, but I believe that the NMNA bird is coming inside as well.

The EAA did have a Skyraider that was in rough shape, but the only time it was left outdoors was during AirVenture, otherwise it was always in one of the exhibition hangars on the convention grounds. The B-17 is always hangared, unless of course when it's on tour.

The B-17 by the side of the freeway in Tulare always freaked me out as a kid.everytime my family would go on vacation and cruise past it had more and more bent, missing, broken bits. Then when It was crashed into by the out of control 18 wheeler,I kinda gave up on ever seeing it under a roof

There are currently plans being made to bring the Grissom B-17 indoors.
