It's a cracking restaurant too. I work on the Shackleton that's parked about 100yards away, and it's been interesting watching it all come together.

There's another DC6 at Coventry as well (G-APSA) and it's still alive, though not airworthy at the moment.

Regards,

Rich

What's the reason it was retired?

From the horse's mouth: http://forum.keypublishing.com/showpost ... ostcount=9

Not a 'warbird' BTW, delivered to CAT (China) 9/58 then Lao Airlines, Southern Air Transport (  ), Trans Continental and finally Atlantic in 1987.

Do you suppose that in future seasons of TOP GEAR we'll see Jeremy, Capt. Slow, and Hamster doing a three car drive off and stopping by for lunch? Can't you just see an Aston, Lambo, and Ferrari all parked in front?

Maybe.

Previous attempts at airliner restaurants have met with mixed success although since this is located in an aviation-themed attraction it probably has a better chance than most of the others. Nobody's gonna get rich though :| .

Do they do the food preparation on the plane, or merely deliver the food to diners on board?

Doesn't look like there'd be enough room in the tail for a full kitchen, and I can't see any attached outbuilding. I'd expect to see vents and some way to get running water in there.

Well, the 6 was equipped with three BIG Janitrol gasoline fired cabin heaters when new,
Kill it and grill it, snippets of whippets, poodles and noodles, want to go to lunch?

I once worked at a (now long gone) airliner restaurant near Boulder, Colorado. The place was called "The Convair," and was made from the stripped carcass of an old CV990. The interior was covered in wood paneling, and was simply a long, skinny dining room. The cockpit was turned into a wraparound booth with seating for six (and a nice view of the mountains.) The plane was mounted on the roof of a one-story building, which housed the kitchen, bar, and a small banquet room. We sent the food up to the plane on a "dumb waiter," a small elevator that ran from the kitchen up through the belly. The control surfaces were gone, replaced with simple sheet metal. Of course the engine nacelles were missing as well.

I worked there in 1984/85. I understand the place had closed up by the end of the decade, but languished more or less abandoned for another ten years or so due to various legal battles over taxes and such. The plane was eventually scrapped, and the building remodeled as office space. One bit of it does still exist..I found an inspection panel lying on the ground under the left wing one day, and still have it.

There is a warbird tie-in..the owner (Bob Rush) was a Marine and flew Corsairs in WWII. I tried to get some info from him about his experiences, and offered to build a model of his plane, but he just wasn't really interested in talking about it. It wasn't that he was blocking any bad memories or anything, he just didn't really think his wartime service was any big deal.

Just remembered a place my dad told me about in Chicago:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/87362701@N ... 178/?reg=1

It's a former Delta DC-7 that was cracked up at O'Hare in '61. Not there anymore; don't know when it was torn down... :(

As far as I know, its only served on the plane, there was no sign of a kitchen in there, just a bar and tables! I'll have a wander over and have a closer look on Saturday.

Rich
